About this bottle

Tomatin Water is one expression in the Five Virtues Series, a collection that also features Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal – elements fundamental to the traditional methods used by Tomatin distillery employees. This whisky pays tribute to the Alt-na-Frith burn, which serves as the distillery's private water source. The maturation process involved sherry hogsheads and second-fill bourbon casks.

What a varied but ultimately unfulfilling evening. Started with a Mr. Black coffee liqueur with espresso (the only time I enjoy coffee, and this combo is great, especially with the addition of cacao husk gin) and then things went downhill. Benriach 17 yr Solstice, which was excellent when first opened, has faded very quickly, like many Benriachs. It's now down to a 3.75 from an initial 4.25 to 4.5 at best. I'll have to give the other bottle away. Old Armagnac, mezcal, grappa, Bols - none of which were great, and now I'm back to whiskey. Sadly, this was a sample I purchased during my "I'll try anything" phase, which I've now realized is pointless. If most people say something is average or bad, it usually is. These days, I only seek out the good stuff because drinking whiskey should always be a pleasure, not a chore, which this is. Smells and tastes like sweet honey mead with a hint of oak. Very watery and artificial. Tomatin makes excellent products, but they really dropped the ball with this disappointing release.
