Flor de Caña Extra Seco 4 Rum

White, lightly aged, unaged, or silver rums, whatever you choose to call them, are not usually my go-to for sipping neat, though I do possess a good quantity of them, so I decided to compare 8 to see which would come out on top (among Angostura, Privateer, Havana Club, Cana Brava, Barbancourt, Flor de Cana, Banks 5 Island & El Dorado). I didn't anticipate this ranking low, but Flor de Cana Seco 4-year white rum is too common and while it performs well in a daiquiri, it's strictly for cocktails or mixers. The nose is subtle with molasses and ethanol. The palate is dry with hints of oak and vanilla. Again, nothing remarkable. The finish is very brief, with a slight burn and some sweetness. There's not much to say about this rum; it's too generic and offers little complexity. If you intend to mix with it exclusively, I would choose this over Bacardi, but not by a significant margin.

The first light rum that made an impact on me. I'm on my second bottle because it pairs well with most summer cocktails. It's very clean, lightly sweet, and subtly grassy in flavor, with a dry burn at the finish. Absolutely superb in light Latin drinks like Daiquiris and Mojitos—it truly enhances the citrus and vegetal notes in each drink respectively. Definitely not a sipper, but my go-to white/silver/light rum mixer for all the common summer cocktails.

Neat. Crystal clear color. Aroma of clean alcohol, hint of mint/menthol, whisper of banana peel if you look for it. Taste starts with some white sugar and light molasses sweetness. Slight citrus, grass, and wood notes. Dry finish with vanilla sweetness. Sippable, but better for mixing. An improvement over other major brands for adding a little complexity to simple drinks. Good value for the quality (My cost is shown for 1.75l)

A vivid, herbal scent of fresh sugarcane on the nose is complemented by underlying notes of banana, molasses, lemon zest, and coriander. The mouthfeel is rather oily. The palate initially is predominantly grassy, with the fresh sugarcane reappearing, joined by subtle cinnamon, more banana and coriander, and then concludes quite neutral and dry, with mild warmth. 2.75/5.00 – Acceptable (neat)

The nose has ethanol, vanilla, and black pepper. The taste is incredibly clean, with a decent mouthfeel, vanilla, light sweetness, and then it fades. It was great when tried in a mojito. A subtle vanilla note on the finish was quite pleasant.

A respectable white rum. I'd rank it alongside El Dorado 3 year, but it's five dollars less. It's an excellent rum for mixing, but not bad at all for sipping neat either (though honestly, that's not its intended use).
