Empress 1908 Elderflower Rose Gin

I wasn't aware that adding ingredients after distillation qualified as a flavored gin, though I don't see how that's confusing, just unexpected. Then again, producing any kind of colored gin seems out of place, with Empress 1908 being one of the very few examples. In any case, I didn't realize this was only the second release from this distillery, with a new cucumber lemon version recently released to the US (perhaps Ohio will get it in 2026), and a standard cocktail gin also available somewhere. I don't recall being particularly impressed by the flavor of the indigo gin, and felt that most sales relied on the color-changing gimmick, so I'm hopeful that some of the very unique botanicals in this blood-colored version will improve upon its purple predecessor. I'm not entirely sure of the purpose of focusing so heavily on creating a colored gin beyond mere presentation, but it does make this one resemble watery fruit punch that's also a deep shade, as if you used twice the recommended amount of mix but then added ice cubes that have since melted. Juniper and ethanol are the dominant elements on the first few sniffs in the glass, but elderflower and lavender provide a pure floral character underneath, without any added sweetness. There's also a citrus note, but it's more akin to lemon than orange. Repeated smelling builds up a spiciness in the aroma, but it seems to stem more from the ethanol than any specific herb or spice. Both the flavor and body initially present as very neutral and quite weak. Citrus oil is the first distinct note detected, and while there's a general floral blend behind it, it's very dry, and apart from a slight hint of rose, nothing stands out. Repeated sips essentially go in circles, starting with neutral juniper, followed by a light spritz of citrus, and a dry, floral finish, though the ethanol is more prominent and sharp than expected at this proof level. Another questionable Empress 1908 gin makes me question how well their uncolored cucumber lemon and cocktail variants are selling. Is the brand's only strength showcasing a wild and unusual cocktail hue? While $40 isn't an unusual or excessively high MSRP, with countless other options at that price or lower, what am I truly getting in terms of flavor? It's certainly drinkable, but I suspect that's not the primary selling point. Furthermore, this is the first and only gin I've encountered with a "best by" date from the distillery, warning that the color will noticeably fade and recommending it not be consumed more than a year after opening. Ultimately, there's nothing special here to recommend if your reason for drinking gin is to actually taste the gin.

The aroma is still strongly juniper-forward, with a delicate rose perfume. The mouthfeel is surprisingly smooth, with the elderflower softening the pine-like intensity. The initial bright crispness of the juniper berry quickly gives way to a mildly fruity and rose petal character. The result is absolutely delightful, revealing a whole new spectrum of flavor possibilities. This new version and its gentle handling of potentially dominant botanicals are truly appreciated. We'll be using this in various gin cocktails for a long time. Highly recommended.

On the nose: juniper, rose petal, elderflower, lavender, coriander, orris root, and lemon zest. The palate is rounded and substantial, showcasing more coriander, juniper, rose petal, elderflower, and orris root, along with bold black pepper and a touch of cinnamon. The finish is long and smooth. Rated 3.75/5.00 – Very Good (neat).
