About this bottle

This is the second vintage product released by Don Q. The 2007 vintage is a single barrel offering that matured in used American bourbon barrels. To maintain its single barrel integrity, the rum is only diluted with water for proofing, with no other spirits incorporated into the blend.

Maverick Stamper 3.8

A pleasing single barrel aged rum. Aged in American white oak barrels starting in 2005. Having sampled the majority of the bottle over several weeks while drinking it neat, I feel ready to offer an evaluation. My bottle, number 130, is 80 proof and displays a honey-amber hue. The aroma and taste present vanilla, wood tannins, spice, and a subtle rum character. It feels heavy and oily on the palate with a rather lengthy, dry finish. I suspect no added sugar, which is common for other rums to mask flaws. Overall, this rum leans towards the drier side. Without dominant molasses notes, it might be suitable for cocktails needing a light rum component. It's a very enjoyable spirit to sip.

This bottle has been waiting since before Christmas, and I'm finally opening it in August. I really should have done this earlier! It has a nose of smoked oak and very mild fruity notes. More oak appears, along with brown sugar and toffee. A touch of spice emerges, with a whisper of apple. The body is remarkably light for a rum of its age. Its finish is incredibly smooth, almost refreshing. Subtle fruit and nut flavors linger, alongside more of that smoky oak character. This is my initial experience with a Don Q rum, and it certainly won't be my last. Get a bottle if you have the chance. This is unquestionably one of my new top picks. It's an excellent spirit for those who enjoy rum or bourbon.

Comparable to the finest I've experienced. Very woody, brown sugary, with a bourbon-like quality for a rum. It brought to mind the positive aspects of a certain rum I enjoyed, but with a smoother, lighter body and demonstrably no added sugar. Woody and exceptional; a personal favorite!

It didn't quite deliver the flavor intensity I'd hoped for, but it's still quite good. My top picks are typically Kirk & Sweeney 18 Year and Papa Pilar 24 Year, with Zacapa 23 Year also ranking highly. This one opens with smoke, then transitions into a gentle sweet butter rum taste.

Esteban Burrell 3.0

The nose has wonderful caramel and toffee. It smells better than it tastes. The flavor is a bit unusual and flat. Lacks complexity. The finish is decent. Overall, a satisfactory sipper.
