Delord Armagnac VSOP

This is my initial experience with armagnac, a classical yet underappreciated French brandy, largely due to its more famous sibling, cognac. After the first few sips, the overall profile of this spirit felt similar to whisky. Not all whiskies taste alike, of course, but they all share that inherent grain character that clearly distinguishes them from fruit or berry-based spirits. However, it eventually revealed its own distinct identity, though at times one might perceive a sense, or even a hint, of drinking a sherry oak-matured malt spirit. The aroma is bold and intense with a light spirit note, accompanied by vanilla, grape-soaked wood, overripe dark red fruits, figs, dates, prunes, and a touch of spices like paprika or nutmeg. The taste is rich with plums, fleshy overripe grapes, both peach and apricot jams, along with astringent and spicy raisins, cinnamon, and again, nutmeg. The finish unexpectedly presents a citrus note, curcumin, cloves, (yes, nutmeg again), and a palm sugar that spreads throughout the mouth. This VSOP version of Delord has made a significant impression on me, inspiring a desire to explore the world of armagnac more deeply.

Too harsh compared to other armagnacs and most cognacs of similar age, yet it stands well on its own. I doubt I've ever tasted so many dried apricots in a drink before.

I detected many apple notes, somewhere between cognac and calvados. It's not soft and delicate. A bit disappointing. Rated 3 out of 5.
