Lot: PAP-171 It smells of musty leather with a faint fruity aroma attempting to emerge. The taste is dark, earthy, and smoky, a complete contrast to most mezcals I've recently sampled. Notes of leather, forest floor, black olives, portabello mushrooms, twigs/dried leaves, and tobacco are present, with hints of blueberry trying to balance the dark, earthy flavors. The finish is characterized by a persistent smokiness. It also has a large, creamy mouthfeel. I'm still processing this one, but I really like it.

About this bottle
The Nahuatl word "Papalome" or "Papalometl," meaning "butterfly," refers to a wild agave variety that visually resembles the agave Tobalá. This mezcal is produced by Maestro Mezcalero Fernando Caballero Cruz in San Pedro Teozacoalco, Oaxaca. Maestro Fernando employs a distinctive distillation technique, using stainless steel pot stills equipped with a clay and bamboo condenser, which is considered by some to offer the best of both worlds.

Excellent! Earthy and smoky, yet very approachable. It has a cured, meaty taste similar to salami. Subtle hints of clay. Reminds me of an Islay scotch! One of my favorites.
So intricate and captivating. Certainly much sweeter than anticipated.
Smoky and fruity, this is fantastic. A stubborn seed from Miami.
