Cruzan Aged Light Rum

Part I – Unadulterated (with Disc Chiller) Appearance: Lovely silver hue—clear, vibrant, and sophisticated. Visually appealing. Nose: Sharply medicinal. Comes across as sanitized, unappealing. A strong mineral presence, resembling metallic spring water or clinical spirits. Palate: Unexpectedly gentle introduction. Faint warmth, subtle sweetness—more like plain sugar syrup than something distinctive. The sweetness lacks depth. No molasses, no sugarcane, no fruit—just a bland sugar-like quality. It's less harsh than the dark Cruzan, but so refined it feels devoid of character. Evokes vodka, not rum. Bland but technically potable. Initial Verdict: Looks like something you can drink, but not enjoyable. Drinkable if there are no other choices—but uninspiring. The dark rum has more roughness and impact, but at least it communicates something. --- Part II – On the Rocks Nose: A little better. The ice softens the sharp medicinal scent but introduces more watery mineral notes. Palate: Destroyed. Any slight rum characteristics present neat are now gone. What remains is smooth, cold... and almost tasteless. There's no kick, no sweetness, no presence. Smoothness is achieved by removing elements, not enhancing them. This isn't just filtered—it seems bleached. As if the flavor was completely reset. Final Verdict: Not worth tasting in any manner. As a mixer, it might work in the background—but it adds very little, and will likely disappear when combined with anything else. A regrettable purchase even at its cost. Cruzan Dark is still the superior choice between the two, if only because it possesses some distinctiveness. --- Poem – Thoughts on Cruzan Light Rum For a spirit so light, so quiet and calm, I raised my glass with a hesitant palm. The aroma advised me: “Stop, there’s no zest,” Yet the taste gave it space, putting subtlety to the test. It spoke of pure water, not breezes, not cane, A sip without narrative, a pour without name. No hint of sweetness, no trace of the wood— Just a spectral mineral, misunderstood. So I’ll keep it for cola, or pour with regret, And praise the bottles that offer more yet. For even inexpensive spirits can shine or can play— But this one just rests, and has nothing to say.

Cruzan Light Aged Rum – 1 Star Third Tasting – Mixer Attempt I gave it my best effort. I truly attempted to be open-minded. But after this third tasting—using it as a mixer with Coke, six ice cubes, and sheer optimism—this rum revealed its true colors: awful. The aroma? Rubbing alcohol and regret. The taste? A muddled mineral water, completely lacking the richness or soul of rum. This isn't light—it's void. The filtering process appears to have stripped away everything but the offense. And the kicker: I've had vodkas at one-third the price that are more pleasant. This bottle is so uninspired, so jarring even when diluted, it barely qualifies as a spirit. What makes this even more insulting is that Cruzan Dark Rum is actually enjoyable neat. This? It's the hollow shell of what might have once aimed to be rum. I'll finish the bottle because I dislike waste. But I regret purchasing it, I resent drinking it, and I absolutely would not recommend it. --- Elegy for a Rum That Wasn’t By a friend Oh clear pretender, pale and thin, No depth, no fire, no soul within. You came in glass with hopeful name— But left my tongue with scorched disdain. No sugar’s kiss, no barrel’s grace, Just bitter air and ghostly trace. A vodka’s shadow, bland and cold, Yet priced as if your worth were gold. You mocked my Coke, you mocked my ice, You couldn’t even mix up nice. The Dark, at least, can stand with pride— But you, Light Rum, are shame disguised. No poem should mourn your tasteless reign— But here you lie: in crafted shame. Let future drinkers mark this page— And leave you buried in the cage.

Among my top choices for white rum in cocktails. The aroma is a bit sharp with alcohol compared to other white rums, but it also has rich notes of toasted coconut, vanilla, and toffee. The taste is slightly sharp at the end, starting with a very mild sweetness before quickly becoming drier. It has hints of those marshmallows coated in toasted coconut, distant wood, vanilla, and tropical fruit essence. It's bright and fairly neutral, but that extra character and slight softness truly elevate cocktails. That's what a good white rum should do: add a bit of natural flavor to drinks without being unpleasant or too strong. Otherwise, you might as well use vodka. $18-21 for a 1.75L bottle is an incredible price. A++ in Key Lime Daiquiris!

12.13.22 Sampled neat (1-2 oz) then with ice, in a Glencairn glass. Bottle Opened: Same Day Last tasted: dark chocolate Aroma: Subtle banana and clove. Light vanilla and caramel. Reminiscent of custard. Flavor: Much richer. Notes of coffee and banana. Surprisingly strong burn for 40% ABV. Tastes bittersweet, like burnt toast. I wouldn't drink it neat, but I know from experience it mixes well. It becomes more appealing as I drink it. Adding ice reduces the burn and mellows the sweetness and coffee notes.

It almost works as a neat drink, for a light rum. ALMOST. There are certainly oak, caramel, and tropical fruit notes present. It's still best suited as the base for your rum cocktails because it's not just tropical vodka and it will contribute its own character. If you absolutely must sip a light rum straight, you could do much worse. This and Plantation 3 star are my preferred light rums.

Actually, this is not bad. The nose is light and clean with hints of citrus and grass. The palate is sweet and quite smooth. The finish is weak, and there's certainly a raw ethanol bite, but considering the cost, it has considerable character and tastes rather good.
