Clynelish Select Reserve (2015 Special Release)

Second release. My understanding is these originally retailed for over $900 USD, but likely poor sales due to the No Age Statement have resulted in much more attractive pricing for me. Consequently, I have acquired two bottles! The color is a deep, rich gold, with a very oily, thick body and long, slow-moving legs. The aroma is of honey, citrus, and I detect a hint of apple pie crust. I can discern apples, pears, and perhaps a touch of dry white grape. Adding water sweetens the aroma and makes it significantly more approachable and inviting. This is one of the most challenging spirits I've had to review. It starts in one place, shifts dramatically, and then the high alcohol content hits like a wall. The initial taste is of sweet fruits, with a touch of waxiness that prevents the citrus from being too sharp. The spirit then transitions to an oily and mildly savory character. Water accentuates some of the tart fruit notes and pushes the oily, waxy elements to the background. There's a trace of herbal bitterness and mineral water. The finish is long, sweet, with mineral notes, and possibly a hint of light smoke. So, what's the final assessment? Well, this is truly excellent stuff. It's complex, nuanced, it lingers, and it leaves a lasting impression. The high alcohol content is also a delightful addition. I purchased two bottles for just under $300, but I cannot confidently say it's a must-buy at that price point.

This is truly cask strength. High in alcohol. A fiery yet smooth mouthfeel. Fruity notes can be tasted afterward. Tasty but not worth the high price (it's because it was a limited edition). Hence 3 stars.
