Kristal Goodson 5.0

Chartreuse V.E.P. Green, meaning "Exceptionally Prolonged Aging," a liqueur made by the Carthusian Fathers. This is the original green Chartreuse formula with 130 herbs/ingredients, aged an additional 8 years ("extra long aging") in oak barrels and bottled at 54% ABV in 1000 ml bottles that are individually numbered, wax-sealed, and stamped. This particular taste is Exemplaire no. 932-2448, acquired in Salt Lake City, UT in November 2020. Similar to green Chartreuse, the nose is intensely herbal and sweet. The palate is deeply herbal and sweet with an ethanol burn, but it offers a more profound, oaked, and woody flavor. The mouthfeel is viscous and medicinal. The color is green, but darker (browner?) than standard green Chartreuse. Sipping this ice-cold causes it to grow on you rapidly. I first encountered Chartreuse in Chicago in 1986 as a graduate student; it impressed my future wife (who knew it from living in France) when she found it in my apartment; and I've maintained a bottle on my shelf ever since. Yellow Chartreuse became available in the 1990s. This VEP is an opulent addition to my collection, fitting for an exceptional year (2020) in history. Cheers!
