As a rye, the spice is definitely noticeable... It's present, but let's examine the complexity within this straight rye. From aroma to taste, it presents a variety of flavors with a bright, forward profile, while the spice somehow tempers it into a mellow complexity. What I appreciate is the corn-like sweetness in the mid-palate. Nestled within this section are notes similar to apple and other citrus fruits, transitioning from the corn whiskey character. To conclude, the spice takes over as expected for a straight rye. That's to be anticipated. Regardless, it was a pleasing experience and I enjoy ryes. Not quite Ezra Brooks 7 Year, but a better-than-average rye whiskey.
