About this bottle

This bottling is the third in the brand's Cask Finish Series, which involves blending straight bourbons and applying unique finishing processes. Barrell Bourbon Cask Finish Series: Mizunara begins with a combination of straight bourbon whiskeys from Indiana (aged 6, 7, & 9 years), Tennessee (aged 8 & 14 years), and Kentucky (aged 8 years). The resulting blend then spends an additional eighteen months aging in Japanese Mizunara oak barrels. It is bottled at cask strength of 116.42 proof and has been offered at select retailers nationwide and through the BCS website since April 2024. The suggested retail price is $89.99.

Russel King 4.5

Aroma - A really pleasant nose here. Lots of candy and citrus notes. Occasionally, I get a nice baked brownie profile too. Some dried tropical fruit notes also start to emerge (like what you find in some prepared trail mixes). Taste - Everything from the nose transfers to the palate. I'm still getting lots of citrus, candy, and tropical fruit notes. The chocolate appears and disappears, and when it does, it's very nice because it adds a lot of depth and richness. It keeps the palate from being too sweet from the fruits and candy notes. Overall - A unique flavor profile with a very pleasant mouthfeel and a long finish… it just keeps going. The finish is really nice… it keeps developing and various notes play on the palate. It's really clean for the proof too… not much heat. This company does a wonderful job of creating incredibly unique and complex whiskies. For the price, this is spot on. With each sip, you notice subtle differences in the flavor profile, which draws you back to the glass. Moreover, the finish is just awesome.

Glass: Glencairn, rested 15 minutes. Color: Medium amber. Nose: Caramel and cinnamon, similar to a candy apple. Palate: Cinnamon and clove, with some oak and baking spice. Finish: Medium heat, but long lasting. The clove notes are very prominent. Splash: A spearmint note emerges. Overall: 9/10 - I enjoy the direction this is going. This is my first mizunara finished bourbon and it certainly won't be my last.

Notes of orange, cinnamon, and honey. It's sweet and lingers on the finish. The mizunara cask aging works well with Barrell's blending expertise. Truly skillful, in my opinion.
