Balblair 18 Year

I must be honest. I've completely overlooked this distillery in my whisky explorations. I don't often give it the attention it may warrant, and I had the impression it was a secondary or tertiary option compared to the top performers. How wrong I was. While dining in Tain, Scotland, I noticed this 18-year-old bottle on the shelf. I ordered a glass, and I was astonished. Bottled at 46% ABV. On the nose, rich and pleasant. Oranges, BBQ sauce, savory honey, and a pork chop. After the initial taste, it revealed an aroma of cooked apples. It has a slight resemblance to a fish market. Intriguing and unusual. On the palate, it was wonderful. Smoke, hay, very rustic. Tobacco. After the first sip, it offered stewed apples and honey; however, the hay smoke was remarkably aromatic. Aftertaste is very pleasing. Ginger, aromatic smoke. Honey, bonfire, and BBQ sauce. Truly excellent stuff. Overall, this was a delightful surprise. It possesses unusual flavors and aromas that aren't commonplace; it provides something novel, enjoyable, and interesting. This is precisely what I seek in a new whisky: fresh sensations. Excellently delivered, my rating for it is 94 out of 100.

An initial sharp alcoholic note greets the nose, but it soon develops into a very fruity aroma with notes of cooked pear, raisins, pineapple, ripe figs, lemon, and nutmeg. Frosted cereal notes are in the background. The sweetness is balanced and multi-layered. In the mouth, it becomes warmer and spicier, reminiscent of a pear and cinnamon cream cake, with hints of milk chocolate flakes, hazelnuts, candied orange, and a touch of star anise. There's a subtle roughness from the background, like leather and wood, creating an interesting contrast. The finish is medium-long, with notes of hazelnut chocolate, cinnamon, and cooked pear. If the contrast in the aromas had been more pronounced, I would have found it more engaging; however, it remains a complex and far from boring whisky that warrants further consideration.

Nose: peach, apricot, in short, a delightful fresh fruit salad! Palate: very dense and oily, the fruit seems to be overwhelmed by vanilla and honey, the influence of the ex-bourbon barrels is noticeable. Finish is slightly bitter and short-lived. A product that is certainly not unforgettable. Rating 3.25 ____________________________________________________ Nose: peach, apricot, basically a lovely fresh fruit salad! A product that is certainly not a showstopper.

Doesn't have much of a nose. Perhaps I have a cold I'm unaware of? Nice dark color. Fairly smooth neat, with a smooth aftertaste. Very easy to drink, and on the rocks it's a good starter whiskey for young people (just kidding!!). Very easy to drink... but it doesn't spark my interest in whiskey. I might have to try it again.

Quite smooth. The legs in the glass are very prominent. Oily and viscous with a taste of toffee and vanilla, full-bodied. Long and rich finish. Suitable for a thoughtful, special evening and with a cigar. 3.5. The price is too high, in my opinion.

Enjoyable, but not worth the increased cost over the 15-year version. There's a lingering spice. It's sweet, like vanilla and honey, but lacks significant complexity. I had higher expectations.
