About this bottle

This rum blend, derived from molasses, is aged for up to four years in heavily charred barrels, hence the Spanish word for black, "negra." The spirit undergoes charcoal filtration. Note that Bacardí Carta Negra and Bacardí Black Rum are the same product.

I'm new to rum, but this one strikes me as unusual. Currently available alongside it are Cacique Anejo and Capt. Morgan Dark. This rum is initially sweet, quickly followed by bitterness. I haven't found a good mixer for it that suits my palate, and I suspect it would be best consumed heavily diluted with something sweet that can overpower its own strong character. Straight it's rather unpleasant, though tolerable on ice. I won't repurchase it and might even give the bottle away.

Full disclosure: My experience with rums is quite limited! This one has a powerful molasses aroma with a hint of allspice. However, the taste is unusual: thin and bitter, with a spicy, almost rubbery or tar-like conclusion. It performs better in mixed drinks or when stirred into eggnog, where its potent and slightly unusual flavors are somewhat concealed and harmonized.

I see what they were aiming for... but they didn't come close at all. There are worse things out there, where was that cola again? 🥤

This offers an excellent balance of cost and quality.

Sharp taste and smell when drunk neat. Okay when mixed.

Excellent standard rum, great for a rum and coke!
