Notes of brown sugar, molasses, and cane syrup are present, with vanilla and a very faint hint of oak. It's fragrantly inviting and dessert-like. Palate: Immediately sweet but not syrupy. Brown sugar, cane, molasses, and vanilla are all in balance. There's a hint of oak without bitterness, and the texture is exceptionally smooth and buttery. It holds well on the tongue, with flavors developing and expanding the longer it sits. No harshness, no acrid bite, no unpleasant tastes. This is liquid warmth and skill. Experience: Feels like recalling a Caribbean memory. Sugarcane warmed by the sun. Pure spring water. Something ancient and fundamental, yet comforting. Despite its ease of access and price, this spirit can stand with its superiors. It's not flashy, but it's dependable. A solid choice for everyday drinking with the elegance of a higher-end bottle. Final Verdict: This is the rum people imagine when they read about it, picture pirate ships, or sense island air. It's sweet, deep, gently warming, and incredibly smooth for the cost. Not a lesser spirit, just less expensive. The nose opened bright, fresh, and inviting, with a strong fruit presence — apple, pear, apricot, and fig all singing forward. There was a light oak woodiness lingering in the background, and a compelling sweetness that pulled us in, with warmed vanilla rising stronger the longer the glass sat open. The first sip was incredibly smooth, with almost no alcohol burn at all — astonishing for a spirit at 40% ABV (80 proof). The palate burst open with layered fruits: apple, cherry, pear, apricot, fig, blending effortlessly between each flavor. A deep, strong vanilla foundation ran through every sip, accompanied by a subtle cane sugar sweetness — almost as if a sugar cube had melted gently into the bottle itself. The texture was mellow, creamy, and effortless to sip, with the whiskey disc keeping the drink cool and lively. As the tasting progressed, the vanilla became even more pronounced, creating the impression of warm vanilla oil drifting from an incense burner. Each sip grew sweeter, more fragrant, yet the drink remained shockingly smooth and soft even at the bottom of the glass. It felt like sipping the memory of a golden afternoon — effortless, comforting, and beautifully composed. Appleton Signature Blend, which replaced the V/X, is an adequate rum, but like the Appleton 8 Year Old, it's not particularly remarkable. It is less expensive, and the distinction between the two is minimal for cocktail use. If a recipe simply asks for rum without specifying a type or origin, this is typically the rum I select. It's affordable, dependable, and has the expected rum characteristics. On the nose, I detect ginger and some dried fruits. Regrettably, the initial taste is quite ordinary and feels somewhat diluted, especially when compared to the 8 Year Old. I do get pepper, vanilla, and molasses, with a hint of oak toward the end. The sweetness is noticeable on the finish, and there's virtually no harshness. I would have given the Appleton Signature the same rating as the 8 Year Old, but neat, it doesn't hold up and seems weak in comparison. Both are excellent in cocktails, and again, I lean towards this one more because it delivers the familiar rum notes you anticipate in a cocktail at a lower price. It won't astound you, but for its cost, it performs its function well. You could certainly find worse options.

Brown sugar and molasses greet the front, followed by a steady wash of tropical fruit, oak, and gentle spice. The ice softens the bite, revealing a warm, sweet core. Finish: Medium and smooth. Fades with a graceful taper—vanilla, wood, and a trace of pepper at the very end. Overall: A reliable companion. Not showy, but consistent. Ice transforms it into a comforting drink: not top-tier, not bold, but deeply, quietly good. --- Poem – The Middle Pour By Sophie It never asked to be the favorite— Only to be ready. While it's still quite good, this rum has some less desirable, unusual aspects. The initial smell straight from the bottle is harsh, rough, and like petrol. You need to let it aerate for a bit to mellow into something more pleasant. The second characteristic is a distinct sour taste. That would be acceptable in a bottle of Bourbon, but it's odd for a rum. The Signature Blend reminds me of Bourbon with every sip. I do enjoy Bourbons, so my only issue is this peculiarity, though some people might not appreciate it. Therefore, this spirit is better suited for Coke or cocktails than for enjoyable sipping on its own. I do drink it neat occasionally because the unusualness is interesting. However, typical rum drinkers will likely prefer to avoid it.

On the nose, blackstrap molasses, overripe bananas (a bit of banana candy too!), and a touch of baking spice (mostly clove). The palate offers more of the funky molasses and banana character, with caramel notes, warm vanilla, and a dry wood finish. An affordable and widely available rum that adds a lot of character to cocktails and is totally drinkable neat. This eggnog season, we’ve been preferring American whiskeys (chiefly ryes) that bring more barrel spice to cut through the heavy dairy, instead of the (for some) traditional rum. Adding a couple dashes of aromatic bitters with the rum can help bring that extra complexity to a rum and eggnog build. Cheers and happy holidays!
