White, lightly aged, blanco, or silver rums – whatever you prefer to call them – are not generally spirits I'd consume neat. However, I do possess a fair number of them, so I decided to sample eight to determine the best (comparing Angostura, Privateer, Havana Club, Cana Brava, Barbancourt, Flor de Cana, Banks 5 Island, and El Dorado). The initial one on the list is also my least preferred. Angostura 3-year white rum is about as close to a vodka-like rum as you'll find here. Is it usable? I suppose, but I wouldn't choose this in any scenario, and it falls into the same category as Bacardi white rum – strictly for mixing. I'd steer clear of using this in a stirred cocktail; stick to long drinks. The nose is brief, with a hint of oak and ethanol. The palate is equally unexciting, featuring a touch of lemon peel and sweetness. The finish is reminiscent of vodka, with pepper and a slight burn. Once again, I would avoid this, particularly if you enjoy drinking white rums straight. It's inexpensive, but you get what you pay for.
