About this bottle

While recognized for Scotch, the independent bottler A.D. Rattray also offers rum. They acquired a substantial quantity of rum distilled in 1997 from the now-closed Caroni distillery in Trinidad. These rums are subsequently aged, with limited releases featuring progressively older age statements, such as this 16-year-old expression. These are essentially single-cask bottlings, leading to potential variations between casks.

Herschel Lundy 3.3

It has a powerful aroma. A subtle peaty scent is present, which carries through to the taste along with a surprisingly strong iodine note. The smell is rich, smoky, and sweet, with hints of cherry, toffee, and wood. The palate is high in alcohol, delivering a significant menthol impact. The wood is very noticeable, complemented by some unexpected mineral notes. There are traces of dark red fruit (cherry), but they are not overwhelming. It's intensely woody and astringent. I value its richness, but it might have been pushed too far, resulting in over-oaking. That touch of peat is definitely there, contributing smoke and menthol. In that regard, it bears a slight resemblance to mezcal. There are some firework-like flavors that recall popcorn kernels. It's a decent enough drink, but not a top pick.
