Xin Gin

This is not an aged spirit, despite someone listing it as 2 years old, and "copper pot distilled" not being a cask type, but nice effort. Batch number: 1 It's unusual that I've only sampled a couple of Irish gins and have seen few more. You'd think with so many stills in Ireland, they'd be producing more than just whiskey. Perhaps there are rums, agave spirits, and gins that aren't widely available or exported, but even so, an Asian-Irish fusion gin was not something I anticipated. They fully committed to this, with the bottle's artwork, design, and shape being very distinctive and clearly having an Asian influence. The choice of completely opaque, coated glass complements the exposed cork well. Most importantly, the selection of Asian-inspired botanicals is not only unique individually but even more exciting when combined with an Irish base. Wow, the aroma is very vibrant and strong here. While juniper is present, it's not as dry as expected and is full of citrus oil, lemongrass, and a hint of allspice. A general floral character begins to emerge, focusing on rose, and even the specifically used persimmon can be detected. A slightly sweet grain note appears at the end, and this is also where the ethanol causes a minor sting to the nostrils. The body is light and watery initially, but in a refreshing rather than weak way. The first taste is distinctly floral, starting with rose, followed by a touch of ginger and some lemongrass, then a rapid shift to notes of cinnamon, and surprisingly, dill is also noticeable. The finish plays with all these flavors, but the dill is quite persistent, being very unexpected in a gin botanical mix. Although the finish becomes somewhat dry and even spicy, it encourages repeated sips to restart the experience. Definitely a memorable and unique gin with its blend of different cultures and botanicals. As this was a gift from a native Chinese friend, I agree with his suggestion that it would be excellent with a little ice to enhance the Asian botanicals. However, I don't think ice is necessary, and it's just as enjoyable on its own as it is versatile in cocktails. A reasonable price point truly completes this uniquely delicious gin.
