Worthy Park Single Estate Reserve

Nose: Banana, grilled pineapple, fresh-cut grass, rotting guava and mango, a hint of diesel oil, brine (pickle water), axle grease, orange peel, thyme, bitter almonds, oaky vanilla. An appealingly robust aroma after it has aired out. Palate: Initially, the taste was brittle and almost metallic upon opening the bottle, but with exposure to air, it has mellowed. The initial impression is sweet, lively, vibrant, and fruity, yet still presents some sharp elements (herbal lozenges, green olives, lemon, and oak tannin). The progression is smoother, showcasing abundant tropical fruit, nearly burnt caramel, and orange oil. It almost reaches cloying sweetness, but a spicy chili kick appears midway. The consistency is slightly oily, leathery, and "bristling" (if that's understandable), with a grassy agricole character. Finish: Medium/long. Fruity hogo and slightly tart fruit notes with plenty of spice. A minty, anise-like quality lingers. Abundant delightful fruity hogo on the nose. When the bottle was first opened, it seemed quite sharp and harsh, but after a couple of weeks with some oxygen, the aroma has mellowed and become wonderfully inviting. Likewise, the palate felt a bit tight initially but has relaxed and gained sweetness with some air. Overall, this is well-balanced and a solid entry into Jamaican rum. It doesn't possess the complexity and refinement of a top-tier, high-ester pot-still rum, but it's more approachable. If you sample this and dislike it, high-ester rums likely aren't for you. If you find it captivating, especially the scents, then more potent and amazing hogo rum experiences await. Excellent for sipping and even if not enjoyed neat, it creates an outstanding Cuba libre. After over five years on this platform, this is the first spirit I've requested for a review, and I am the inaugural reviewer. I'm quite enthusiastic about this delicious rum, so here's my take. The aroma is reminiscent of other Jamaican rums I've encountered, featuring tropical fruits and overripe bananas, a characteristic sometimes referred to as 'hogo.' Rum from Jamaica shares similarities with peated scotch, possessing a distinct sense of place in its aroma. This particular bottling offers a more delicate profile, akin to Caol Ila in the scotch realm. It enters the palate with fruity and buttery notes of mango, papaya, guava, and plantains. Towards the latter half, there's a subtle presence of barrel tannin and more of the 'hogo' detected in the nose. Regarding the rating: I enjoy this rum, but Jamaican rum isn't my preferred style at the moment. Nevertheless, Worthy Park produces a great deal of quality rum, and this is certainly a premium product worth trying. Cheers!

Aroma: Banana, arrack, oranges. Taste: Banana, a subtle hint of coconut, arrack. Aftertaste: It's smooth initially, then develops a slight alcoholic harshness.

An unusual nose with notes of grilled pineapple. Hints of honey, mango, and waxy apples. The finish is moderately dry. It could benefit from a bit more alcohol content. A solid pour.
