Aroma: Notes of dill and rye. Palate: Primarily grain initially, but quickly shifts to a fruitier, vanilla profile. Finish: Brief, with the sweet character carrying through and a touch of spice at the end. Located in Pittsburgh's Strip District, this local craft distillery uses an organic mash bill of 68% rye, 18% wheat, and 14% malted barley. This "wheated rye" enhances the typical rye character with more vanilla and caramel notes on the palate. An interesting variation on a rye that is perfectly enjoyable on its own.

This rye is milder than others, yet still flavorful. The nose offers anise, rye grain, tobacco, and hints of honeyed fruit. The palate features typical rye herbal notes, mingled with a cigar box mustiness and finishing with pepper on the back of the tongue. The finish is gentle but lasts a good while. The mouthfeel is a bit thin, likely due to the proof, but it's an enjoyable drink overall.
An interesting new find! Light, sweet, and pleasant flavor. It's a bit lacking in body but has good complexity. Hints of cedar and rye spice make it very approachable. I much prefer it to the old Forester rye. This would easily be a four-star choice if it were bottled at 100 proof. It just needs a bit more age and strength.
Rye spirits from PA have a distinct character, and this one from Wigle is no different. It shares familiar qualities with Dad's Hat and New Liberty ryes, which is a positive in my opinion. I detect subtle black pepper and cereal grains on the tongue, followed by a slightly spicy finish.
Wigle is knowledgeable about Rye. This Rye is now Straight, and they have been transitioning from small to large barrels. Their PA Rye (this one) is very approachable with dark cherry notes. Their Deep Cut Rye and Single Barrel Straight Ryes are also wonderful and good for rye enthusiasts.
Quite thin and light for a rye, but perhaps that's because it's not entirely rye. It tastes a bit young, but has a very pleasant flavor and is quite well-rounded. Tobacco and spice. Almost no burn!
