About this bottle

Westland's Wine Cask Finish, the first batch, is a new addition to the distillery's main offerings as part of its Cask Exploration Series. Crafted with various malted barleys, this American Single Malt is finished in wine casks from the Pacific Northwest following its initial aging period. The finishing casks previously held Tempranillo, Washington State red blend, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Petit Verdot. Matured for five years and bottled at 92 proof, batch 1 saw the creation of 14,614 bottles. Subsequent batches will be released as needed. It will be available at the distillery and online in August 2024, with broader national distribution beginning in September 2024. The suggested retail price is $74.99.

The wine notes on the aroma are subtle but pleasant and well-integrated, which I believe is a positive sign. The flavor is intense, with oak and spice perfectly balanced, overlaid by those deep wine notes. The wine tannins and wood complement each other harmoniously. It has a medium-full body, and the finish lingers at the back of the throat with a burn and tannic bitterness. I'd guess the wine barrel was Cabernet. This is exceptional.

I was really looking forward to trying this and it met my expectations. Since they age it in local wine casks, the red wine notes are present. Initially, the aroma had notes of cocoa powder, chocolate, and vanilla. On the palate, it transitioned to chocolate with raisins and toasted cereal. It was among the preferred drinks of the evening. A fantastic dram!
