Jack Daniel's Twice Barreled American Single Malt (2022 Release)

The nose is abundant with toffee, cigar tobacco, maple, dried fruits, bananas foster, leather, and a musty moss/forest scent. A bit more ethanol than anticipated for the proof. The palate delivers French vanilla, plum, apple, pear, date, butterscotch, cherry pipe tobacco, raisin, and the faintest hint of banana. The flavors are intricate and perform exceptionally well for their category. The lingering finish takes a sharp turn, introducing a strong black tea leaf note, along with more plum, oak, white pepper, charcoal, cinnamon, and a developing mint with subsequent sips. The mouthfeel is quite oily at first, then becomes dry; so dry, in fact, that it feels somewhat harsh and doesn't complement the flavor profile, which would benefit from a creamier texture. A noticeable drawback. Overall, it's quite good. I'm not the biggest tea enthusiast, so the pronounced black tea note in the finish was a slight negative for me, though I recognize that might be a personal preference, making it hard to penalize solely for that. What's easier to criticize is the $199 I paid (admittedly overpaid, but I found it unexpectedly and couldn't pass it up). Would I pay that price or anywhere near it again? No. But I shouldn't judge it based on that cost. At a retail price around $80? I'd buy it again without hesitation. A solid 4.

Received a 2 oz sample from a friend Opened a few months ago Aroma - Stewed berries, fruitcake, musty barn, plums, brown sugar, milk chocolate, gingerbread, moderate oak, and light ethanol. Taste - Berry and plum jam, raisins, maple syrup, gingerbread cake, Milk Duds, and rich oak. The finish is medium-long with traces of dry oak tannins, cocoa powder, ginger spice, grain, tobacco, and light ethanol. This is wonderful, easily among the finest American malts I've experienced. It has rich, viscous, and complex berry and malt flavors without excessive oak. The distillery continues to impress with their barrel proofs and special editions. Would I pay a massive markup? Certainly not. But it's worth the full price at MSRP. Hopefully, this indicates future standard releases like their Special Release Rye Barrel Proof recently became. We want barrel proof malt from JD!

Aroma - a dessert explosion. Butterscotch, caramel, banana bread, with cherries in the background. Well-integrated oak provides balance. Honestly, it doesn't present as a twice-barreled product from this sample. Taste - A powerful wave of sherry immediately hits and persists through the mid-palate and finish. The sherry truly dominates the palate, in my view. I can detect some of the original profile in the form of caramel and bananas foster, perhaps a fleeting hint of butterscotch that appears only occasionally. Chocolate-covered raisins are also subtly present. Overall - I favor the aroma over the taste. The sherry is intensely bold on the palate, leaving a slightly drying sensation on the finish. 4.35

Aroma: A very rich tobacco aroma, complemented by leather and caramel. Quite earthy and herbal. It possesses that pleasant earthy funk, reminiscent of old leather armchairs, a fine cigar, or freshly tilled soil. Taste: Tobacco, barrel spice, caramel, and brown sugar. Hints of coffee and a bit of chocolate. This is truly enjoyable. Finish: A long, lingering sensation on the tongue. It coats the mouth. It doesn't provide that 'Kentucky hug' in the chest. I do appreciate that warmth, though. Overall: 4.5/5 stars. If you enjoy single malt whiskey, this has it all. It's delicious, and the color is a rich, dark amber, almost like sap. I appreciate this pour. This bottle could bat cleanup in many lineups. A true performer.

The color is a deep cranberry hue. This is a cask strength spirit, so personal preference for intensity is a factor. On the nose, you experience charred oak alongside sweetness from the sherry. Tasting Notes: The initial taste features charred oak, reminiscent of sitting by a campfire, transitioning into a brief, pleasant spicy kick. The middle palate presents oak with its spices and hints of vanilla, but it doesn't overpower the senses. The finish is a lovely sweet, fruity sherry that helps to counteract the smoky campfire sensation. It concludes with a smooth finish.

Nose: Unconventionally delightful. Molasses, berries, dried red fruit. Palate: Completely distinct from the nose. A wonderfully oily mouthfeel. Caramel, cinnamon, vanilla, and cereal. It drinks much lighter than its 106 proof. Adding a drop of water brought back the berry notes from the nose. Finish: Slightly short but very well-balanced. So unlike the standard JD profile, and I consider this a fantastic limited edition. Skillfully crafted and thought-provoking. I can picture myself taking this on camping trips, perfect for quiet contemplation under the stars.
