About this bottle

Westland's seventh annual Peat Week event will take place virtually from January 26-28, 2021. In commemoration, the distillery is releasing two single cask festival bottlings, each aged for over seven years. Single cask #438, crafted from heavily peated Baird's malt, was matured for 89 months in a first-fill ex-bourbon barrel and bottled at 61.4% ABV.

Among all the Peat Week releases I've sampled, the 7th Annual Peat Week stood out as a favorite. The concept of a twin release was appealing, providing a dual experience or one of two selections based on individual taste. The Ex-bourbon Cask lacks the complex richness of the Ex-Rum Cask, but despite its high proof (122.8!), it feels more measured and intentional. Its characteristics are more conventional, grounded in wood, vanilla, and baking spices. It's truly remarkable how much detail can be perceived from this pour while the warmth intensifies through your chest and throat. It's a genuine shame more individuals beyond Washington State didn't get the opportunity to experience these releases. Westland consistently delivers. Finished: 08/26/2022
