Westland Distillery's fifth annual Peat Week, scheduled for January 22-26th, 2019, is being commemorated with this American single malt bottling. The Seattle-based distillery organizes a series of events during this week. This whiskey is crafted from Baird's heavily-peated distiller's malt, featuring a peat level of 55ppm. The maturation period for this whiskey ranged from 36 to 63 months. Production was limited to 1083 bottles, which will be offered at the distillery and select retailers.

Not a typical "peated whisky." The nose has vegetal peat, lacking iodine, salt, or fish notes, with mild sweetness. The palate initially resembles a Port Charlotte for a second or two. Then, only mild sweetness and peat, with zero smoke. A very disappointing dram. It lacks sweetness and flavor depth, and what is a peated whisky without some smoke?
Very light color, with a light hay aroma. Nose: The peat is noticeable immediately upon pouring. It's a sweeter, kelpy peat, with hints of cucumber, sweet mint, and salad. A bit of a barnyard character. Taste: Clean malt at first, quickly followed by barrel spice and then floral peat. The peat smoke wraps your tongue like a cozy blanket on the finish.
Moderate peat and smoke. Pear, unripe peach, vanilla on the nose. The peat smoke diminishes on the palate after the initial sips, remaining present but in a supporting role. Bright white fruit, vanilla, and custard emerge. Moderate finish.
Not as good as the regular peated whiskey, but it holds its own. It smells like a clean river stone, with notes of earth, smoked meat, and a fresh wood campfire. It's complex and pleasing.
As a devoted fan of Westland, I find this to be among their finest releases. It's remarkably well-balanced. If you appreciate Speyside scotch, you'll thoroughly enjoy a serving of this.
