Laphroaig 30 Year The Ian Hunter Story Book 1

In recent times, I've attended numerous tasting events showcasing remarkable whiskies that I might otherwise be unable to afford. This particular expression falls into that category. The Ian Hunter Story initiates a new series from Laphroaig, intended to honor significant figures from the distillery's rich history. It is 30 years old and priced at approximately $1,250 per bottle (or an astonishing $50 per ounce!). Interestingly, with older Laphroaigs, the very qualities that initially attract us to Islay whisky, such as its intensity and smokiness, become less pronounced with age. Similar to us, it matures, softening its sharp edges with each passing decade. Here, three decades have transformed the ashy bonfires of its heavily peated malt into aromas of incense and cedar, occasionally presenting a gin-like herbaceous and citrus fruit profile. Dried, candied pineapple and almonds are more noticeable than the peat, reinforcing an observation made with other Laphroaigs aged over 20 years: the medicinal notes found in younger versions mature into potent, somewhat unusual tropical fruit flavors. The palate offers medicinal tea paired with grilled pineapple and maintains that juniper-like, gin essence. Some smoke reappears on the finish in wisps of black tea and brine. Personally, perhaps due to financial constraints, I favor Laphroaigs from my teens over their older relatives. Laphroaig aged between 14 and 18 years represents near-divine whisky perfection. We've had the privilege of sampling several independent bottlings over 20 years old, as well as the official 25 and 30-year-old expressions. While they reveal some deep nuances hidden in younger spirits, they also lose as much as they gain. For me, Lore and the 10 Cask Strength are the peak of the current offerings. To echo the words of the great poet, "Nothing of it that doth fade/But doth suffer a sea-change/Into something rich and strange."

The aroma presents a delicate harmony of peat, caramel, toffee, and floral notes, with an underlying essence of barley. The mouthfeel is substantial, and the flavors are remarkably well-integrated. Tastes include caramel, peat, herbaceous florals, brine, and light smoke. This is a truly exceptional and rare dram. An absolute must-try.

In February, I had the chance to attend a tasting in Northern Virginia, where Laphroaig 30 year was a highlight. The taste was sweet and, surprisingly, less peated than I anticipated. Its time in the cask imparted a remarkable smoothness and made for a unique experience.

The aroma features fruitiness and the characteristic smoke, though less intense than other Laphroig varieties. There are also hints of salt, seaweed, and sweetness. The palate offers chocolate and toffee, combined with salt and smoke, followed by vanilla and honey. The finish is pleasantly long, with a harmony of fruit and spice.
