Catalina Pichardo 3.0

From a Japanese whisky tasting event in Sydney on March 28, 2018, this was Whisky #3. The aroma was lightly fragrant and floral, with a base of good quality ethanol and a subtle peat smoke. The palate offered a sweet arrival followed by smoke, cereal flavors, and a hint of salt, lacking significant complexity. The short finish featured lingering salted cereal and a touch of smoke. A drop of water amplified the gentle smoke (likely under 10ppm) and improved the overall body and texture, bearing some resemblance to Bruichladdich Classic Laddie with its gristy, floral character but less intensity. It is un-chillfiltered and naturally colored. This distillery, also known for sake brewing since 1953 (primarily under the "Sunshine" brand), is reportedly expanding its whisky production. While this expression includes a Scottish element, its origin is unclear; the local distributor claims the use of imported lightly peated Scottish barley, whereas online sources suggest a blend of Wakatsuru malt and Scottish grain whisky. It's an enjoyable whisky but not particularly distinctive. "Above Average": 80/100 (3 stars)

Kaiden Esquivel 4.5

Simply amazing. Likely the best whiskey I have ever encountered.
