The aroma presents nuttiness, not peanut, but more akin to hazelnut or walnut. It's buttery, even burnt butter. Perhaps cranberry, or is that just due to our recent Thanksgiving dinner? Compared to Stranahan's, this is far less fruity and dessert-like. It's more savory and herbal. There's a hint of stone fruit, but it's not prominent. I detect some smoke throughout, which I believe is characteristic of Union Horse Distillery. I notice this in their other releases, particularly the four grain, and it's likely my favorite aspect of the experience. Ultimately, I feel Union Horse products are progressing towards Balcones' style, but with less sweetness and fruitiness, while also being less harsh and bitter, yet still rich and flavorful. This makes them much more approachable in my opinion. This is good, not great, in my view. However, it is quite distinctive. I think if you appreciate Balcones, you would likely appreciate Union Horse.
