Tyrconnell 10 Year Madeira Cask Finish

Context: These and the Sherry casked are the only two Tyrconnell expressions I have tried. At 46% ABV, they are quite strong for me. I used to much prefer the Sherry version two years ago. Now I'm not so sure, and I can't pinpoint why. Nose: Mostly alcohol, wood stain, and a faint hint of sweetness. A powerful wave of etheric aromas characterized by noticeable woodiness. Taste: Similar to the nose. Lacks complexity but isn't unpleasant. Difficult to drink without water. This is after swirling several times and letting it sit for at least 45 minutes. Finish: Dry, continuing the dominant alcohol and aromatic wood stain sensation with a hint of dried wine-like grape. Appearance: Attractive--light wheat or darker straw color, similar to urine after a meal with plenty of fluids. Mouthfeel: Always challenging for me to assess because, as someone with a less sensitive palate, I struggle greatly to detect subtle differences and distinct notes. It's adequate. Overall: Very alcoholic and reminds me quite a bit of Macallan Edition 4 in its woodiness. Significantly less complex and flavorful, of course. A budget alternative. It's never my first choice, but acceptable when financial constraints lead me to a whiskey purchasing drought, forcing me to choose between good and great options.

Uncorked this on St. Patrick's Day 2020. The aroma is wonderful, sweet and fruity. Perhaps notes of tropical fruit, maybe banana or mango? It has a decent alcohol content and a sweet, malty taste, which then turns somewhat bitter and oaky with a spicy finish. It's a pleasant, affordable Irish Single Malt. Packed with flavor and a slight warmth. It's earned a permanent spot on my shelf. The nose is definitely its strongest feature, but the mouthfeel is agreeable, not too watery. This offering is quite distinct from typical Irish Pot Still or Grain/Pot Still blends and bears a resemblance to Scotch. Cheers to deception, larceny, conflict, and libation! A pleasant and balanced Irish whiskey, though somewhat sharp for its age. The sweetness and mild fruitiness from the Madeira cask are present, but unfortunately, it's surpassed by a significantly cheaper whiskey (in highly taxed Michigan), the Sexton single malt, which is distilled in copper pots, offers a complex, woody character, and is finished in Sherry casks. Even with a few drops of water added, The Tyrconnell is still not as smooth as the much less expensive whiskey. This demonstrates that brand and age aren't everything.

An incredibly intricate whiskey, sometimes displaying a multitude of characteristics, the final result is something everyone should experience at least once. It features malted barley, pineapple, and pleasant spice that harmonize beautifully for a smooth conclusion. I found it enjoyable.

It has a sleek, smooth mouthfeel, and the whiskey itself is rich and well-balanced. On the palate, the Madeira cask finish imparts tropical fruit flavors, sweet spice, chocolate praline, and malt. This is an excellent ten-year-old single malt.

[Whiskey Live New York 2016] - A familiar light single malt profile that I associate with Tyrconnel. The additional barrel aging provides good flavor and some bite, but considering the cost, I can't justify seeking out this bottle.
