About this bottle

Established in the late 19th century, Tomatin was once Scotland's largest distillery and continues to operate with twelve stills. While a significant portion of its output is for blending, the distillery also produces a core range of single malts and limited editions. This 30-year-old bottling, limited to 2,000 bottles released in 2011, was exclusively matured in refill American oak casks.

I noticed this bottle on the shelf for around 300 and decided to purchase it. After consuming half the bottle, I can say it's truly remarkable. Nose: malt, pears, a hint of sweet beer, leather, walnut Palate: Very vibrant, with smooth caramel, treacle, and an almost baked pie crust flavor, followed by leather, very sweet tobacco, and dates. Finish: long, oily, more sweet malt and leather, wonderfully smooth. I would buy it again; it holds up well against many of my more aged Scotches.

Aroma: Evokes a wooden cabin on a pleasant spring morning, just warm enough to awaken the structure from its winter rest. A container of honey rests on the kitchen counter. Taste: Intriguing... Bready, subtly sweet, with a slightly savory element, surprisingly like refried beans. Finish: Lingering, with a whisper of mint. This was challenging to fully discern from a single serving at a bar. It's distinct and warrants further exploration, but didn't immediately compel me to purchase a bottle.

Once again, the distillery misses the mark. An incredible whisky, and quite spirited for a 30-year-old. A fitting drink for a 30th birthday, just like mine.
