Tortuga Twelve Year Old Premium Gold Rum

You’ve likely encountered Tortuga Rum Cakes on a cruise ship's duty-free shop in the past two decades. However, a visit to the Tortuga Rum Cake factory in George Town, Grand Cayman, allows you to sample their original rum! While most are standard flavored rums (aged six months), they also provide a five-year and a twelve-year Gold Rum. This review covers the twelve-year offering. As a relative newcomer to rums, my ability to discern flavors beyond typical white rum is still developing. Nevertheless, this is a promising beginning. The aroma features pleasant cotton candy notes, along with some fruitiness, possibly red apple. The taste is quite full-bodied and very sweet. The caramel is well-developed, offering nuances that will require time to fully appreciate. I would certainly purchase another bottle if the chance arises. Acquired February 2019.
