Tomintoul 14 Year

The aroma suggests peat, but it's absent from the taste. It has a muddled, chemical-like character fitting for a Campbeltown. The finish concludes with a standard scotch profile. However, it's smooth for a 46% ABV. This higher alcohol content also leaves a stronger impression than the bottle deserves. The taste opens up with subsequent sips, transforming into a profile similar to a typical bourbon cask scotch, with the muddled character appearing in the middle of the palate. Pours a nice pale straw color, this non-chill-filtered dram lacks caramel. The nose has sweet honeyed malt with some floral and fruit (apple?) hints. These appear in the initial taste and are followed by a lively peppery note in the finish, likely from the oak. Experimentation shows that the peppery quality diminishes with a few minutes of breathing or the addition of a few DROPS of water. (Adding more water turns this dram into an indistinct mess.) Preferences vary. This dram has no smoke, peat, or sherry. It's one of those gentle malt and slightly floral drams. If you appreciate that style (as I do), this would be a good one to try. (I personally would place Glen Grant 12, Glenmorangie 10, Ancnoc 12, and Compass Box Artist Blend in that category.)

The aroma has sweet apples, vanilla, floral honey, lemon zest, strawberries, and a subtle cinnamon spice with hints of cedar wood. - On the palate, it's initially a bit sharp, with green apple citrus, honey, vanilla, black pepper, spicy oak, cinnamon, bitter lemon peel, and a marmalade sweetness. - The finish is quite full, with lingering floral herbal notes, spices, rich toffee sweetness, and a touch of oak. — This is not exactly a "gentle dram," but it is satisfyingly flavorful, despite its slightly young character at 14 years. — Malt Mark: 88

Bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered. The natural, light straw color is quite appealing. I appreciate a dram that doesn't conceal its age. Upon first nosing, there's a strong alcohol presence, followed by butterscotch, fruit, and vanilla. It has an oily texture, surprisingly briny, sweet, and intensely spicy, in that order. The robust cinnamon and pepper spice give way to a lingering bitterness of cocoa and mint. This is really fantastic. I enjoy a spicy spirit, and this one certainly delivers.

The aroma is gentle, characterized by smooth pear along with subtle notes of clove and baking spices. The taste mirrors the aroma, though with a slight acetone note. Lacks complexity and richness. Not outstanding but strangely charming.
