Balblair 12 Year

A pleasant dram to enjoy that lacks depth, isn't very memorable, and is overpriced, in my opinion. Nose: The initial scent is dominated by citrus and spice, a combination I don't favor. After airing, a deeper inhalation reveals some vanilla, nuts, and honey. Palate: Faint orange, spice, honey, more spice, and a tingling spice with... well, spice. It's very subtle, and you really need to let it sit to discern what's happening. It has no depth; it's nice to sip and challenge your palate to find what lies beneath the spice. Be warned, it doesn't linger long, except for the spice and warmth. Finish: A redeeming quality here is the "oily taste & texture" that works wonders, in my estimation. It hits my tongue on the way down with a pleasant amount of honey, but this quickly disappears, leaving only spice. It's an easy drink, but the spice is too prominent for me. Lovely light flavors, but overpowered by the chili. For the cost, I won't be purchasing this bottle; I'd much rather have my Aberfeldy, Balvenie, or Glenfiddich for a similar profile at a better price.

The aroma of this pour is rather gentle, with some soft, subtle notes of vanilla and coconut. I'm having trouble assessing the taste because I just consumed some very dark Lindt chocolate beforehand (they don't pair well), and there's a sharp spiciness lingering. However, the texture is smooth and oily, and the finish is long and pleasant. Very warming. I can imagine this being a delightful choice for a chilly winter evening by the fire 🔥

The aroma offers rich honey and woody notes. The taste is a lasting blend of barley, cream, vanilla, and banana. It's similar to the Glenmorangie Cadboll Estate 15yr, but perhaps richer. However, the Cadboll has a longer finish. This tastes like a classic Speyside, despite being marketed as a highland style. It's a solid, overlooked, and reasonably priced scotch.

The nose presents notes of cereal, mint, and biscuit, along with an underlying floral character. The initial taste brings intense orchard fruits, and copious amounts of toffee and brown sugar. A pronounced almond note appears in the development and finish. A superb example of bourbon aged in ex-bourbon casks - a genuine toffee powerhouse. And, for the moment at least, an excellent value.

Nose: Sweet, fresh, with notes of lemon and toffee. Palate: Hotter than the nose suggested. Sweetness of apple, vanilla, spice, and licorice. Finish: Brief, with more spice and a slight sourness right at the end. Overall, this is an adequate sipper. It's not particularly special, but it's a pleasant whiskey for warmer weather.

It smells like a Speyside that's better than average, and I admit that's a generic description. The taste is similar, but leaning towards the 'better than average' aspect. It's very woody, with abundant barrel influence, and a sweet raspberry note on top. Fantastic; I'm quite pleased.
