Arran Sauternes Cask Finish Single Malt

Nose: Sweet, intense floral and woody scents. Granola and vanilla yogurt with manuka honey; tropical blooms in a greenhouse (hibiscus and frangipani) with a dark, nearly overwhelming fleshy, dank aromatic presence. Lemon peel, pineapple, banana, stone fruits (apricot, nectarine, peach), some orchard fruit. Quite a captivating aroma! Palate: Sweet arrival - very sweet, almost like syrup. The progression reveals a rush of warm spicy notes that unfurl like a radiant blanket, build to an almost-but-not-quite intense crescendo, then fade to gentle warmth. The texture is oily and thick, carrying a host of sweet fruity and floral tastes. The allure is complete - I surrender! Finale: Medium. Sweet cereal, citrus, and malty notes dissipate to a gentle bittersweet finish that is quite excellent. A standing ovation. The influence of Sauternes is strong here. Wow, so much dessert wine character! I know from the source that Arran enjoys using damp casks, but these must have still had liters of Sauternes soaking within them. One might expect something horribly artificial, but not at all. It's delicious and remarkably fresh and lively. However, don't expect refined elegance when facing this; you'll be disappointed. This is all about bold personality, showing off its sassiest and most sophisticated side. Yee-ha! Is that a pistol in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me? This is the first of three reviews, tasting the cask-finished trio from Arran. We're off to a blazing start. This is a stunning whisky (tasted from a 30ml sample) "Very Good": 87/100 (4.25 stars)

The nose begins with a sweet and slightly tart blend of honey crisp apples, lemon zest, and nectarines, followed by toasted sourdough, honeysuckle, and a light sea salt. It then transitions to mango, persimmons, and dried pineapple, leading to light baking spices and mild oak with minimal ethanol burn. The taste has a medium mouthfeel, starting with effervescent lemon-lime and honey cough drops, then toasted coconut, honeysuckle, and light sea salt. This is followed by a mango smoothie, persimmons, and dehydrated pineapple, transitioning to light baking spices and mild oak with a moderate ethanol burn. The finish is medium in length, starting with creamy tropical fruits that quickly shift to a mild spice and slightly tart citrus. This delightful single malt perfectly balances sweet, sour, and mildly savory notes, creating a refreshing, vibrant, and easily drinkable dram. The Sauternes finish is very subtle but certainly adds complementary citrus notes that interact wonderfully with the Arran spirit. At around $80, I consider this a very reasonably priced offering for the current market, and most would find it highly enjoyable. Many thanks to a friend for the generous sample.

A chance discovery in a hidden shop led me to this bottle. The Arran Sauternes Cask I found was bottled before 2019. The price was excellent, so I bought it. Nose: Very fruity, with tropical notes like pineapple and mango. It smells very fresh and feels cool on the nose, evoking a summer drink vibe. I also detect oranges and grapefruit. Towards the back, there's some leather and a slightly odd note. A hint of whipped cream and banana is also present. Palate: A very sweet, fruit-forward introduction with a syrupy texture. It's much sweeter than I anticipated. It shares many similarities with the new Ardnamurchan AD/10, possibly due to both being finished in white wine, though Paul Launois is a champagne. It has richness and an oily quality, but something is missing in the mid-palate. There's a little spice, not much. The finish is medium-short. The aftertaste is like sweetened grapefruit juice. Overall, it's a solid dram with a very dessert-like character. It's a great sipper for relaxing on the beach on a summer day.

Tonight, I sampled all three of the non-age-stated cask finishes: Sauternes, Amarone, and Port... Nose: malt, sweet fruit, a touch of honey, pear, egg custard tart with nutmeg, pastry, sweetness, and hints of delicate citrus. Palate: Smooth and silky honey, mineral notes, mild vanilla maltiness, presence of toasted oak. Gentle citrus and ginger notes. A tiny bit of water really brings the citrus and salt to the forefront. Finish: Medium short. Citrus oils, honey, ginger and a pleasant warmth. The aroma is light, bright, and delicate, leading to an interesting palate with a rich flavor profile that gives way to a soft, clean finish. Overall, it's sweet but not cloying or sticky. The saltiness is excellent without being overly briny, and the typical Arran spirit characteristics are still present. Instead, the spirit is nicely enhanced by this quality cask treatment. In short, Arran has captured springtime in a bottle.

I adore Arran. Everything they produce is so rewarding, refined, and easily drinkable. This time, a 50% ABV dram finished in Sauternes wine casks for added complexity. Nose: Numerous wine-influenced notes, including white chocolate, peaches, vanilla, milk formula, cocoa powder, and a delightful buttery chocolate known as 'Bon o bon,' very popular in South America. Palate: Although a bit straightforward and one-dimensional, it's highly enjoyable. The first time I've encountered condensed milk in a whiskey! As someone who enjoys sweets, I can't help but love it. Pineapple, very tropical, vanilla, and pineapple. A very pleasant peppery spice. Aftertaste: Almost perfect. Very mineralic, quite 'rocky.' Salt, jalapeño chili, and a 'Crazy Dips' effervescence. Quite nice. Overall: An amazing, tropical, fresh whisky. Highly recommended, especially for a beach day. My score is 92 out of 100. Loved it.

Nose: A very distinct fragrance, a blend of bananas, honey, and unripe lemon zest. Nutmeg with a touch of peanut oil emerges with a delicate vanilla flower scent. Apples are very prominent, but a green apple (like a green jolly rancher) with white grapes and a slight saltiness. The nose is very dry, with white and green fruit notes dominating, almost similar to a light champagne. Adding water truly unlocks an herbal note, reminiscent of strolling through a vegetable garden. Palate: A richer sweetness enters the taste, overpowering honey and white grapes; the Sauternes influence almost makes you believe you're tasting white wine. Delicate and floral with the bitterness of lemon rinds. Feels very dry on the tongue and easy to drink considering the 50% ABV. Finish: Medium length with a subtle oak presence, even more so after adding water.
