Tomatin 12 Year French Oak

This is an uncommon find, as far as I can tell. I've only encountered it one time and decided to pick it up on impulse. The regular 12-year-old was a good deal for the price. This bottle has an older packaging style, so I'm uncertain if the base spirit has changed since the current 12-year-old. What I do know is that it was finished in French Oak, a process I've never found especially exciting. Let's explore it. Nose: Notes of apple, pear, apricot, and raisin. Hints of toffee, vanilla, and honey. A touch of white pepper and oak. Caramel, brown sugar, and almond. Cranberry and frosting. It presents a typical Highland aroma. Palate: Flavors of apple, pear, and apricot. White grape. Vanilla frosting, milk chocolate, caramel, and toffee. Almond, walnut, and chestnut. Orange citrus and honeydew. Raisin, date, and fig. There's more white pepper and oak present. While the flavor profile is similar to the nose, it's much richer than anticipated. It's a solid offering. Finish: Orange, vanilla, and milk chocolate. Apple, pear, apricot. Walnut, chestnut, almond, white pepper, and oak. It largely mirrors the palate. The length is short to moderate. This expression is definitely more sophisticated than the standard 12-year-old. It's a classic spirit for sipping. At approximately twice the price, it doesn't offer the best value; however, I was content to pay for a unique experimental bottling. Score: 3.75/5. It's a dependable Highlander. The palate is truly enjoyable. This is good stuff.

This is a superb Scotch for sipping! I acquired this bottle five years ago. I enjoyed its lovely counterpart five years prior. A recent mention by Cascode inspired me to write this review, leading me to open my cherished final bottle. The nose reveals ripe stewed fruit, vanilla, a hint of spice, and honey. The palate is rich with these flavors and immerses itself in them. The finish is medium-long and true to all the preceding flavor notes. The texture is a silken oiliness. This is a magnificent Scotch that I will undoubtedly never have the opportunity to taste again.

Smooth and fruity, with an added woody intensity. The oak is clearly perceptible in both smell and taste, but there's also a distinct fruity flavor, akin to cherry. It concludes with a warming, robust finish, evoking the feeling of enjoying a whisky in a wood-paneled office after business hours.

Subtle and pure.
