Macallan Gold 1824 Series

Aroma: The scent is very bright with notes of citrus, lemon zest, and grapefruit juice, along with cereals. There's a slight presence of malt, oak, and vanilla, but the citrus dominates. Interestingly, the aroma from the empty glass is full of honey with no hint of citrus. Taste: The initial taste is smooth yet slightly tannic, developing into a palate dominated by citrus flavors, especially lemon zest. A combination of sweetness and oak tannin is present, making it unclear if it creates balance or is simply an unusual pairing. Subtle cereal flavors can be found in the background, which are slightly enhanced by the addition of water. Finish: It has a medium finish with more lemon and a flor-yeast note, giving it a bready and drying sensation. Although it seems short initially, the taste lingers. I found this more intriguing than pleasant, as this particular style of whisky isn't to my taste. Adding a teaspoon of water improves the aroma, giving it more breadth and making it less sharp, becoming almost fruity-floral and quite agreeable. Regrettably, water doesn't enhance the taste as much. While some additional notes emerge, it mostly just dilutes the flavor and causes it to break down. If this were bottled at a higher proof and could handle dilution more gracefully, the palate might benefit significantly, allowing some much-needed complexity to surface from the cereal component. I sampled this from a 30ml portion and have no interest in buying a bottle, especially given the cost. Nevertheless, it is well-crafted and above average, albeit distinctive. [Troon, Scotland. 8/16/18] Heading to play the Championship Course at Royal Troon on Friday. Kicking off a golf trip at a world-class course; it only makes sense to pair it with a world-class distillery. The Macallan 1824 series is a collection of non-age-statement expressions based on color rather than age. This whisky's name hints at that, and it features sherry-aged spirit that has matured in a mix of American and European oak for nine to fifteen years. The nose is elegant with a subtle amount of sherry. The palate is also well-balanced with appropriate levels of fruitiness and sweetness. A medium-length finish is smooth and satisfying. Macallan aficionados will not be disappointed with this release, but it won't particularly excite them either. I'd place this at a high 3 to 4, with our current location providing a slight boost.:)

It's acceptable, but not outstanding. Even the characteristic profile of the brand is diminished here. The nose offers vanilla, toffee, orange, almond, and a medicinal wood scent. The palate provides a simple, direct taste of almond and oak, with a brief finish that is warm but not overly so, and spicy but not excessively so. I consider this a whisky for casual gatherings with friends, and it's the most average example of the brand I've encountered. That said, there are less appealing whiskies; this one is not bad, just... ordinary.

This is my top choice from the Macallan 1824 line. It's straightforward, refined, and offers the best value. Right away, you detect the scent of orange peel, which blends nicely with flavors of sweet vanilla, cinnamon, and something akin to baked apple. The conclusion is very smooth and just the right touch of sweetness. If you're new to fine whiskies or need a dependable dram after a long workday, this bottle is for you.

COLOR Burnished Gold NOSE Lemon citrus, followed by orange peel and an integrated sweetness that softens but doesn't mask the zest. A subtle vanilla note precedes dark chocolate, with lingering floral and light oak hints. PALATE Citrus and hard candies dominate the palate, alongside notes of ginger and cinnamon, while gentle oak undertones reveal toasted apples. FINISH Moderately sweet, malty, and somewhat dry.

Light, refined, and aromatic. Regrettably, the flavor profile was insufficient, and the finish does not persist on the palate. However, it is excellent for casual sipping!
