Glenrothes 1998

I've never had a disappointing Glenrothes. This dram can accurately be described as complex, challenging, and rewarding. Bottled at 43% ABV, with a color resembling Amontillado Sherry. Its aroma evolves with each sniff, beginning with buttery and creamy notes, then shifting to lemon peel, damp forest, prunes, and pepper. After tasting, notes of toasted sugar or caramel emerge. On the palate, it is rich, flavorful, and complex. A touch of bitterness, a touch of sweetness. Key notes include ashes, caramel, tobacco, oak, honey, and spent fireworks, all well-balanced for a pleasant conclusion. The finish is long and fruity with prune undertones. A very good dram, earning a solid 92 out of 100.

Wow... The most luxurious of the Glenrothes samples I tasted, a perfect symphony! The aroma begins with potent golden honey, rich sherry, apple blossoms, and Anjou pear. It's like the smell of earth after rain, with bright, twilight-like beams piercing an old-growth forest following a fierce summer storm. Adding water also seems to uncover something deep and earthy in the background, perhaps freshly ground coffee? The taste is instant, with warming spices and lively ginger. Pear reappears in the finish alongside smooth malt and a hint of lingering sherry... A remarkable performance, I'll be looking to buy a bottle. Empty glass: No thanks, pour me a refill.

Smells of lemon zest and light vanilla. The taste is decidedly tropical, bringing to mind caramelized and spiced plantains with allspice and marmalade, plus a pleasant resinous sensation. Delightful in every aspect, it's simply delicious. Perfectly balanced with one of the most wonderful lingering finishes I've encountered—mildly fruity yet rich and spicy. I'd rate this a 4.5 rather than just a 4. This will be a permanent fixture on my shelf.

It requires patience and a bit of water for its aromas to emerge (around 10-15 minutes). Initially, the nose presents tart fruit, citrus, and pear notes, later revealing malty vanilla and caramel, reminiscent of Auchentoshan but with less sweetness. The palate features bright fruit and spice that soften over time, with an increase in malty vanilla. While the floral and citrus notes initially seem to dominate the sweetness, they blossom beautifully with a little water and time. (84)

Full-bodied and velvety. Aromas of prunes, dried apricots, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, vanilla, shredded coconut, and amarone wine. The palate offers a lovely blend of these tastes - warm spices, smooth (but not too sweet) dark chocolate, amarone, and smooth coconut. A delightful drink for after a meal, definitely worth finding!

The aroma brings to mind a collection of yellow confections – banana custard, butterscotch sweets, and lemon tarts. The taste is sweet and smooth, offering rich, creamy flavors of vanilla and banana. The ending is extended and peppery, with cinnamon candies. Caution: this could lead to tooth decay!
