About this bottle

The Balvenie Golden Cask 14 Year, offered solely to the Travel Retail market, spent the majority of its maturation in standard oak whisky barrels. It then received a finishing period in casks that previously contained Caribbean rum. This expression is presented non-chill-filtered at a proof of 95.

Golden cask holds a special place in my heart because it was the first scotch I’ve ever had. I remember attempting to savor the liquor for the first time as opposed to downing it, and being met with an incisive bite. Determined, a group of us continued to try our palate. Eventually, I began to discern notes of chocolate...fruits...wood? It was a whole new world; I had no intention of leaving after seeing what delicacies awaited discovery. This scotch is riddled with honey, florals, tropical fruits, apples, walnuts, tons of toffee, nougat, vanilla, cocoa, rum, and oak. Very sweet, but in the most appropriate and delicious way possible. A shame it was limited release.

Nose: pineapple juice; fresh apples; new oak Palate: oranges; bananas; brown sugar; lime juice; new oak Finish: medium, oily finish; brown sugar; bananas I've experienced superior whiskies, particularly from Balvenie. The 14 Caribbean Cask is markedly better in every aspect. There's a pleasant rum influence on the nose and palate, but the finish could be extended and seems a bit thin. It also tastes somewhat young for a 14-year age statement.

This is my choice for a go-to scotch. It's smooth with hints of peat and rum, all in harmony. It never becomes too much on the tongue. Excellent for a readily available scotch.

I don't have much practice with single malts, but I still find this delightful. It has a gentle smokiness and a hint of rum sweetness from the barrel as it finishes, yet it's understated.

Nose: caramel, vanilla, pineapple Palate: slightly spicy, sweet, vanilla Finish: enduring, initially sweet, with a touch of smoke at the end. Overall, it's quite spicy.

A bit intense. Not much rum flavor detected. It's sweet, with a subtle hint of orange. The finish brings more sweetness in the form of vanilla.
