Thick and rich, almost like butter. It's luxurious and improves with each sip, especially as it airs out. Compared to Patron Anejo side-by-side, this one easily wins on aroma alone, which is full of woody, agave, vegetal, and spicy scents. The Patron's aroma is barely there. The flavors are closer, but this still holds a significant lead. Patron offers a mellow smoothness that could be seen as lacking character or as sophisticated, depending on your perspective. This has abundant character, including a flavor reminiscent of buttery street corn without the toppings. Yes, there's a chardonnay-like quality here that I really like.

About this bottle
Tapatio is produced at the La Alteña distillery in Jalisco, a facility where the Camarena family has been crafting tequila for generations, primarily for local markets. This is a collaborative endeavor between Carlos Camarena and Marko Karakasevic of Charbay Winery & Distillery in Napa. The 100% estate-grown blue agave is roasted for four days and fermented using a proprietary yeast culture that is 75 years old. It undergoes double distillation in copper pot stills, is aged for 18 months in ex-bourbon barrels, and is bottled undiluted to preserve its natural flavors. It is additive-free.

Enjoyed neat. Visually, a lovely golden straw hue. Aromas present sweet agave, aged wood, earthy notes, faint honey, pear, vanilla, botanicals, and black pepper. The palate delivers authentic, sweet agave, honey, oak, vanilla, herbs, cinnamon, and black pepper. The finish has a subtle buttery quality, a touch of sweetness, woody tannins, vanilla, cinnamon, and spice. Appreciates this mellow, authentic anejo that still highlights considerable agave. Reminiscent of a favorite anejo from the same distillery, made with comparable techniques. It falls just short, perhaps at 95% of its quality, but offers substantial savings due to a recent significant price increase, making it a suitable choice for regular enjoyment. Availability can be challenging, so purchasing when encountered is advised.
There's a dusty quality to the aroma here. On the palate, there's the typical agave sweetness, and I detect a somewhat corny characteristic. There are also some green vegetable notes, perhaps akin to roasted broccoli. The finish is distinctly a dusty pepper note with the wood coming through.
Smelling cooked agave, fresh mint, and a whisper of oak. A faint, herbal scent like potpourri. There's also a hint of damp air. It has a light body with some oak, wintergreen, agave, and toothpaste flavors. The taste is vegetal and driven by agave. The finish is herbal with some pine sap and simple syrup. I'm not a fan - it's not very complex, and could almost pass for a reposado.
Really tasty, great flavor, and pleasant on the palate. It's incredibly smooth and silky. My only critique is that it tastes almost identical to the reposado expression. Because of this, I find myself favoring the reposado.
Amazing. Pure agave and pepper with a hint of oak. So light, refreshing, and delicious. If only it were more affordable in Canada.
