Tamdhu Cuatro Reserva Travel Retail Exclusive

Tamdhu has long been on my mind. My research and what I've heard have set high expectations. While brand comparisons are difficult, I have sampled a fair number of Speyside options and have my preferences. A companion traveling through Heathrow brought this bottle based on my suggestion. This particular bottle was matured in four distinct sherry casks, heightening my anticipation. Upon opening, I must admit I'm underwhelmed. This is not what I envisioned. Let's begin with the positives: Nose: Significant sherry influence. Intriguingly, I detected cherry cola, butterscotch, dried fruits, and some honey. The nose is very promising! Palate: This is where the low ABV becomes an issue. At 41.2%, it fails to deliver the flavors perceived on the nose. It's so subtle that one must really concentrate to discern the expected notes. The butterscotch is absent, the cherry is gone, and all that remains is a mild honey with charred oak if pushed intensely. The finish consists of charred oak with a hint of spice, but it's so muted I cannot identify the spice clearly. Perhaps cinnamon, but very faint. The finish is short-lived. This is somewhat disappointing, as I was considering purchasing Tamdhu. At this point, I need convincing that a Tamdhu purchase is warranted. For now, I'll continue to favor Benromach, Craigellachie, Glenallachie, and Macallan when available. Cheers
