Gale Starnes 3.5

Nose: Saline, peat, funk/farmyard/earthy Palate: BBQ pork, muddy, earthy. Sweet and ‘sweaty’. Oily. Finish: Long. Dark chocolate, a good amount of Campbeltown funk. Sweet and slightly sour aftertaste. This dram has a powerful funky flavor. It's an old-fashioned, oily, dirty whisky. It certainly holds its own place in the whisky world! I admire Springbank's philosophy, their old-fashioned production methods, and the fact that they keep most of their whiskies reasonably priced. My tasting notes are nearly identical to the last time I tried this dram at a tasting a couple of months ago. At that time, I noted finding the taste profile quite challenging but intended to keep trying. I'm unsure what has changed in the last couple of months, but having tried it again, I enjoyed it much more than before. Since the last time was at a tasting, it might have been the comparison with other whiskies, but I genuinely enjoyed it this time. I will need to revisit more from Springbank...

(Virtual 10th Birthday Whisky Tasting hosted by Good Spirits Co. Glasgow – June 4th, 2021). Nose: Salty, peaty, with funky/farmyard/earthy notes. Palate: Smells like BBQ pork, tastes muddy and earthy. Sweet and 'sweaty' tasting. Oily texture. Finish: A long, funky finish. Sweet and slightly sour aftertaste. This dram has a strong funky flavor profile. It's an old-fashioned, oily, and robust whisky. It certainly has a unique place in the world of whisky! I admire Springbank's philosophy, their traditional manufacturing methods, and their commitment to keeping most whiskies reasonably priced. However, I find the flavor profile quite challenging. I will continue to explore it, though! It ranked third out of six drams, receiving 19% (9 votes) of the votes for favorite of the night. 91% (43 votes) of attendees indicated they enjoyed the whisky.
