Shinju Japanese Whisky

When was the last time an attractive bottle caught your eye? I did a double take seeing Shinju's appealing cylindrical bottle with its auburn liquid. Shinju (真珠) translates to pearl in Japanese. According to the label, 'ancient Japanese believed pearls were created from the tears of Angels, born of the water.' Learning further that it was made with water from Mt. Fuji piqued my curiosity! Shinju is a blend of four whiskies, each aged in new and used American white oak barrels. Shinju's nose presents very light ethanol, honey, and citrus scents. Interestingly, this aroma didn't change or deepen significantly over time, except for the addition of subtle floral notes. Beyond a brief moment of fermented sweetness, the flavor profile is almost sour and tangy with barley grain. The finish is quite quick and fleeting, with some oak and a tingling sensation from the stomach up. I wasn't sure what to anticipate but had high hopes for Shinju. While this is a very light-feeling and smooth pour, it lacks body and complexity, despite its young age. I would likely use this in more-delicate whisky cocktails that won't completely overpower it. I'm certainly no Angel, but I shed a few 'pearls' from it not meeting my expectations. 6.75/10

I found this whisky to be a pleasant surprise for its cost. It lacks an age statement, and judging by its deep brown hue, I suspect some components of the blend might not be Japanese. Nonetheless, it's quite smooth, and I would seriously consider purchasing it again. Its attractive bottle also makes it a potential gift option.

A well-rounded, refined expression with notes of honey, orange, and vanilla, complemented by hints of herbaceousness and light oak.

The color is light, but the palate is smooth. It's almost like a very young scotch that was aged in rum barrels.
