Shieldaig Speyside Single Malt

Another young single malt from a store brand. The aroma is a burst of new make malt, a bit of pink eraser, and some garden herbs with mild oak. You can sense some fruit, but it's gentle for a Speyside. The palate has undercooked pasta, a pinch of dried fruit, more nascent new make spirit, and green barrel notes. It's easy to drink but thin and tastes unfinished/not quite ready. The finish is dry barrel with wispy malt and distant fruit. This is simply a budget single malt meant more for mixing or as an introductory drink. The store claims this is their top-selling single malt, and for the price, it does serve a purpose. It lacks any bitter grain twang and can be consumed neat by budget-conscious Scotch enthusiasts. However, more experienced drinkers have no reason to try it. The only Shieldaig worth your attention is the Islay version... 75/100... nothing special, but points for value.

Tasted a 2020 batch of this Non-Age Statement malt from an unnamed Speyside distillery. Nose: Overused ex-bourbon barrel, young malt, some fruit and vanilla. Aroma is very faint. Taste: An exact replica of the nose. Depleted casks. This is a very unremarkable palate, even for a Speyside. Finish: Brief and acrid. A shame. Final assessment: This whisky presents more appealingly than it actually performs. If you're seeking an affordable present for someone who can't distinguish between different whiskies, Shieldaig Speyside might be an option. However, I'd opt for McClelland's Speyside instead, as it's simply superior to this mouthwash.

A very ordinary and uninteresting Speyside single malt. Not much is happening here apart from caramel, oak, and a little fruit. The aroma is weak and unappealing. The taste is slightly better, but not well-balanced. It tastes better with a little water. The finish is short and leaves a lot to be desired. This is certainly inferior to McClelland's Speyside.

A rich, Single Malt from Speyside, Scotland, crafted from malted barley. It begins richly with notes of fruit & grain; a balanced development introduces flavors of caramelized banana, barley & hints of oak; culminating in a delicate finish with a trace of peat smoke. July 2019 / September 2022

Appearance: pale copper. Persistent legs that seem like they'd last indefinitely. Nose: not much complexity. Vanilla and oak. Slightly artificial sweetness. Palate: very similar to the nose, honestly. No burn, easy to drink. A little bitter. Overall: completely unremarkable. Skip it.

Notes of tin, pineapple, and agave on the nose. The taste features abundant honey-drizzled oats. Some wood notes are present, but no smoke whatsoever. It's not bad, very easy to drink. The finish leaves much to be desired. It's a single malt, yes, but it's young.
