A potent, 5-year-old blended rye whiskey from Thurman Wise & Pepijn Janssens. It builds upon MGP's historical whiskey characteristics and proprietary yeast dating back to 1933 when Seagram's owned the operation. A portion of high malt rye mash was incorporated into two rye whiskey batches, aged in charred oak barrels since 2017 and bottled at 50% ABV in 2022. The aromatic profile features fig jam, apple, chocolate, hints of mint, leather, and flowers. Its bold, spicy character reveals maple syrup, floral spice, clove, banana, and apple, leading to a long, intense finish with notes of mint, saddle leather, chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg, and charred oak. From an advent calendar, day four. The aroma presents floral notes, fig preserves, subtle chocolate, and leather, with a whisper of dried mint. Hints of apple pie and spiced wood char are present, evolving into brown sugar and maple as it airs. The palate is remarkably smooth for its 100 proof and five years, offering fruity notes, spiced apple, hints of maple syrup and chocolate, rye spice, dark marmalade, and dates/figs. A touch of leather is detected. The finish is full and warm, with leather, spice, dark fruit/fig, and oak notes.
Aromas of charred wood and stewed fruit with some savory pepper. The palate is robust and sweet, similar to a tart apple cider. The finish is unexpectedly delightful! It's not as peppery as other ryes, but it's like black tea… …this rye is akin to sipping strong black tea brewed in hot apple cider. It's comforting and intriguing. Enjoyable and full of flavors to discover. Delicious!
Its unique character draws me in with every sip. The rum aromas include peach, jackfruit, dates, banana, and baking spices, with a light mint giving way to sweet caramel. The taste delivers familiar rye notes along with leather, spiced apple, jam, and smoky peat, but with a moderate heat that gradually fades. I truly enjoyed this, but it's best suited for whiskey enthusiasts who appreciate novelty.
The aroma is quite subtle, featuring vanilla, caramel, and charred oak. The taste brings floral notes, dark berries, vanilla, and a hint of spice. It's very mellow at first, but this intensity increases towards the finish. It would serve well as a mixer for anything needing a robust rye, and could likely stand alone for those who prefer it on the rocks.
The aroma presents a pleasant combination of oak, caramel, and citrus. The taste shifts slightly, starting with vanilla, then warm spices and charcoal. The finish offers a subtle spiciness beneath wheat and woody notes.
