Rhum Barbancourt 3 Star

Sits just on the wrong side of the line for a balanced spirit. At 4 years, the fresh cane distillate and tropical aging have barely blended, resulting in roughness instead of boldness, and unfortunately bringing to mind some of my worst rum experiences. That said, there's quality here, and the heritage of the older bottlings is apparent; it's just not at the point I'd prefer. Light gold with a thin body. The nose is mostly high notes without much substance, but it's sweet - vanilla, cantaloupe, and fleeting floral notes before the hogo appears and ethanol eventually pushes you away. Appealing overall and consistent with the 8-year plus some minor flaws. The nose is a positive. Light mouthfeel and tends toward sweet syrup immediately. Pretty limited flavor range - a few gentle hints of clementine peel, honeysuckle, pineapple rind - then things quickly turn harsh with artificial sweetener, minerality, and some off-flavors. A tangy sweetness lingers in the finish. To be clear, the potential of this rum is evident throughout, and it's a fair value, but I would strongly advise paying the extra 25% for the 8-year, or choosing from many other blends at the same price that offer similar boldness but with a much smoother execution. The same bottle aged a minimum of 5-6 years might be just right.

The aroma has notes of caramel, wood, even paint thinner, and perhaps a trace of vanilla. It's interesting and somewhat reminiscent of bourbon. The taste is more vanilla, light wood, and a sting of alcohol. A lot more burn and plenty of spice on the finish. I'm a bourbon fan, and some suggest this is a good rum for bourbon enthusiasts, but I'm not sure I'm sold on it, at least when drinking it neat.

A little rough and sharp, with too much of the initial distillation run in this young spirit. However, there's potential here, and the depth of its older siblings is evident. Plenty of vanilla and caramel, with a sugary pear note appearing as the middle leads to the end. It's nice, but not quite for sipping straight. An intriguing alternative to the more mature versions.

Many gallons have been drunk. Many more will be consumed before my body is surrendered to the deep, to decay, awaiting the resurrection of the flesh when the ocean releases its dead, and the world to come, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The nose has a tropical marmalade vanilla scent with a touch of burnt sugar. The taste is smooth, with distinct notes of oak, orange, and vanilla, all enveloped in the grassy sugarcane profile. It's not particularly earthy. The finish is short, sweetish, and herbal, with an overall bright and grassy character.

It smells faintly of vanilla and caramel, quite similar to a Canadian whisky. The taste is subtle yet exhibits earthy and mild fruity notes. A fine choice for cocktails.
