Resurgens Rye

After enjoying whiskey flights, I acquired several bottles from various distilleries in Atlanta. This is one of them. I'm finally sampling it at home. Aroma: Purely grassy and hay-like, reminiscent of an Irish whiskey. After a short while, hints of chocolate and a subtle fruitiness emerge. Initial taste neat: Earthy and grassy. It's akin to inhaling the essence of a recently cut lawn. Not particularly sweet. Its moderate warmth is unexpected given its age and the fact it's a rye. A faint whisper of caramel is present on the finish, but very subtle. (Curiously, my spouse remarked it was 'excessively sweet, but unpleasantly so.') With water added: The aroma shifts to a bourbon-like vanilla and caramel. The dominant earthy grass notes remain upfront. It becomes slightly sweeter, and the caramel notes perceived in the aroma actually materialize on the finish. Finish: Medium to long in duration, sweeter than the initial taste. A touch of coffee bitterness lingers after everything else fades. If the entire experience matched the finish, I would adore it. Overall: This is not a spirit I would personally choose. However, that shouldn't deter most individuals, particularly those who appreciate scotch and Irish whiskey. As I explore more, I'm realizing that earthy, peaty, or grassy whiskies are simply not to my liking. It's a matter of personal preference.

Made with 100% malted rye and twin copper pot stills, this offers a very smooth, unconventional rye experience. The nose is pleasant and full of fresh baked bread and cookies. The palate is grassy, sweet, chocolatey, and then transitions into some baking spices with a touch of heat. However, the grassy note persists throughout the entire experience. The finish is thin to medium bodied, not very hot... but the grass remains. Overall, I would consider buying it again. But they do offer a really cool t-shirt for this expression!

This rye is crafted entirely from malted rye, a rather uncommon approach in the rye world. Malting this rye whiskey undoubtedly alters its character. I detect an aroma of pilsner beer on the nose, and what's absent compared to typical high-rye mashbills is that characteristic minty or pickled taste found in Canadian ryes. It exhibits earthy and grassy notes from its youth, concluding with a brief finish.

The aroma is highly spiced. The palate is warm with a sweet taste. Unlike most ryes, I find it doesn't have that bitter corn flavor that some exhibit (coming from a bourbon background). Spice is accompanied by caramel and toffee notes. This beverage provides warmth. It's the finest rye I've sampled since whistlepig 18.

Really smooth, very much rye. It's not incredibly complex, but the flavor is really good, with notes of vanilla and a peculiar grassy taste.
