Remus Repeal Reserve Series I (2017 Medley)

Remus Repeal Reserve was first introduced in November of 2017 by MGP. For those unfamiliar with Midwest Grain Products, they are likely the largest provider of bourbon and whiskey for brands that do not distill, or for non-distiller producers (NDPs). If a bottle label states "distilled in Indiana," it probably came from MGP. The Indiana distillery was formerly owned by Seagram's and was acquired by MGP in 2011, continuing to operate strictly as a producer and contract distiller for other companies until recently. The George Remus brand was purchased by MGP in 2016 from Queen City Whiskey LLC based in Cincinnati. The bottle's appearance evokes a "Great Gatsby" feel for a reason. George Remus was a Prohibition-era bootlegger who frequented the Seelbach Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, at the same time as F. Scott Fitzgerald. It's thought that their interactions inspired Jay Gatsby, the protagonist of the novel. Remus Repeal Reserve I is a combination of two different mash bills distilled in two separate years. 50% of the blend is from 2005 and 15% is from 2006. Both consist of 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley. The remaining 15% of the blend was distilled in 2006 and is composed of 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted barley. This indicates it is at least a 10-year-old bourbon. It was distilled before MGP fully took over the plant, under Master Distiller Greg Metze, who is now with Old Elk Distillery in Colorado (interestingly, using bourbon from MGP that he himself distilled). On the nose, you'll detect vanilla, kettle corn, burnt brown sugar, cinnamon, and honey. The palate offers honey sweetness, charred oak, vanilla, and cinnamon, which is rapidly overtaken by intense black pepper spice. The finish is quite long and spicy, with banana bread flavor and sweetness at the very end. An excellent bottle that, in my opinion, is well worth the price.

Grateful for this enjoyable pour from a friend. While it may appear ordinary, this spirit demonstrates the skill of the producers. Nose: A sweet floral scent intertwined with tobacco and a familiar hint of vanilla. Taste: A blend of medicinal notes and dried fruits, with sweetness leading into baking spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and a touch of pepper. Body: A medium-rich, oily texture that coats the palate, with a slight tingle at the front. Overall, a very satisfying aged spirit. The flavor and texture are substantial enough to warrant a second serving. Keep enjoying, everyone... Cheers!

Remus Repeal Reserve excels in all aspects expected of a premium Bourbon! Its flavor, balance, and finish are all present at a solid 94 proof. This is a skillfully produced and blended high-rye bourbon! Considering the high prices of many bourbons today, Remus Repeal Reserve represents excellent value! Well done! I rated it a 92.

The high rye content definitely contributes some spice, but the flavor presented as an unusual peppery note. It's smooth with a long finish. Given the price, I found it enjoyable for a single experience but wouldn't seek it out again.

Initially, it's creamy, buttery toffee goodness. After opening for a month, it transforms into straight dill pickles. Drink it quickly or be prepared for disappointment.

Absolutely delicious. Thick, buttery toffee and rye spice create an easily sippable spirit. Allow it a few minutes to settle in the glass before savoring.
