Redwood Empire Foggy Burl single malt whiskey Batch #3. Named for a massive old redwood tree. Made with 100% malted barley, using 12 types, toasted and charred oak cask, 55 barrels in this small lot for Batch #3, 94 proof, distilled grain to glass in Sonoma County, California. Tasted neat. Golden straw in the glass with good coating legs. The aroma is full of malted grain and grape must, soft and sweet, with a hint of vanilla and spice in the background. A truly fantastic beginning. On the palate, sweet cereal and stone fruit, gentle spices, peppermint, and a touch of ethanol. It has a rich mouthfeel, soft but not oily. The finish starts with that sweet pepper grass spicy note and then adds some oak and lemon balm citrus. The finish is of average length, clean, and herbal rather than sour, making you want another sip. This is a gorgeous American style single malt, not as intensely flavored or oaked as some other options but nicely balanced. Adding an ice cube mellows the spice and brings out the sweet herbal notes. I will enjoy this bottle and keep reflecting on it. It might be a bit expensive, but so are the top-tier American single malts.
