Rabbit Hole Boxergrail Kentucky Straight Rye

This marks my third tasting of the four standard Rabbit Hole releases. I'm not fond of the bottle design – it's cumbersome, heavy, and excessively produced with added costs not reflecting the spirit's quality. Furthermore, it's the second of three Rabbit Hole bottles that doesn't stand level; a tall, heavy, rectangular bottle that wobbles on a surface makes me uneasy. The Rye presents a golden rosy color with medium legs in the glass. It states "matured over three years" in new #3 charred oak barrels. A robust 47.5% ABV, ideal for a 95% rye mashbill, suitable for sipping or mixing in a classic cocktail. The aroma presents oak char, leather, and sweet, grassy grain. There's a touch of spice, not overwhelming. On the palate, it develops nicely. Notes of char smoke, tannins, with a bit of ethanol and astringency. Sweetness appears alongside spicy rye, pepper, mint, and dry sweetgrass. It blends harmoniously. A pleasant medium finish where a tingle remains, but so does the sweetness – no dry, sour notes. I didn't anticipate enjoying this as much as I do, considering its young age and some prior reviews. It has more char flavor than many ryes, but also considerable sweetness from the 5% malted barley. I'll revisit this with an ice cube and later in a mixed drink.

Appearance: A mid-tone amber, looking somewhat oily. Smell: Acetone, pepper, with some smoky tobacco. Taste: Spicy butterscotch. Garden pepper. Peppery rye on the backend. The spice endures for a considerable time, with strong wood notes appearing late. Mouthfeel: Medium. Overall: This spirit requires some time to reveal itself. It begins sweet and hot, then transitions to pepper heat, followed by woody heat. The rye spice ultimately dominates everything. I appreciate the aftertaste, but the experience itself is somewhat disorganized. It certainly evolves through distinct phases on the way down. It fits the profile of a rye.

Let it rest for about five minutes. Appearance: Pale rosy copper, with thick legs that cling to the glass; Aroma: Numerous complex notes and a pleasant spicy accent, mature rye stands out with a touch of young rye rounding out the aroma, cinnamon, some subdued baking spices, VERY SWEET; Taste: EXTREMELY smooth and creamy at first, with burnt caramel in the middle and a hint of bright citrus at the back; Finish: Lingers pleasantly, with no harshness at all, a great and very underrated rye that warrants recognition!

Appearance: Pale copper. Nose: Apricot, butterscotch, banana bread, earthy. Taste: Layered. Starts thin and sweet, with notes of apple and stonefruit. The mid-palate has some spice, pepper, wood, and perhaps a touch of tobacco. It concludes with a long, lingering finish that is sweet, spicy, and woody. The wood flavor is quite pleasant. Mouthfeel: Thin to medium. Overall: Not as dynamic as anticipated, but the harmony between the rye and wood creates an excellent aftertaste.

Nose: Barrel spices, vanilla, and light caramel. Palate: Sweet initially, like vanilla cake, transitioning to a spice cake at the end due to the rye's spice. Hints of tobacco and a touch of cinnamon. This is far better than I anticipated. It has a nice long finish. Overall: This is a solid pour. Very enjoyable. A great combination of spice and sweetness with a good finish. I would purchase another bottle.

Pine, rye, vanilla, and light cherry on the nose, possibly with some baking spices. Leather and vanilla on the palate. The rye makes a strong impression on a medium-long finish. Although the bottle indicates 3 years of age, this drinks much younger. For my palate, it significantly underperforms its price regarding flavor and complexity. Numerous more affordable ryes offer superior quality.
