White, lightly aged, blanco, or silver rums, however you classify them, are not usually spirits I drink straight. However, I have a fair number of them, so I decided to sample eight to determine the top contender (among Angostura, Privateer, Havana Club, Cana Brava, Barbancourt, Flor de Cana, Banks 5 Island, & El Dorado). The leading spirit of the eight white rums I sampled, Privateer proved to be more than just an excellent cocktail rum, but a very solid rum for sipping neat. I've encountered aged rums that weren't as good as this one. The aroma is rich with sugar, yet still fruity and carries a scent akin to cotton candy. The taste is buttery with notes of anise, burnt sugar, and bananas. The finish is longer than the others on the list, though still on the shorter side, with grassy notes and a slight burn. Privateer white rum is a fine spirit whether enjoyed neat or in cocktails. It can compete effectively with most other white rums priced under $30 and, once again, it surpasses some aged rums. About this bottle
Privateer Silver Reserve Rum is made using a blend of grade "A" molasses and real boiled brown sugar, which is simmered pressed cane juice. A proprietary yeast strain chosen for this rum initiates a lengthy fermentation period lasting six days. The rum undergoes a double distillation process, initially in a pot still, followed by a second distillation in a still equipped with plates, more so than used for their amber rum. Subsequently, the distillate matures for several months in stainless steel tanks. Soft water is incorporated gradually during the process and at the time of bottling, the rum reaches 80 proof. It is presented unfiltered and contains no added sugar or other additives.

Aromas of pineapple, grassy herbs, agave, and vanilla on the nose. Grassy notes are very similar to martinequ rhum. Finishes with lime and vanilla. An excellent white rum from the USA.
