Port Charlotte 10 Year First Edition

I've attempted to document my impressions of this bottle on three separate occasions, but I've ultimately failed. My tasting notes consistently mirror what was previously written by another reviewer. The only additional observation I'll make is that it doesn't fare well when the bottle is only partially full; the aroma becomes singularly focused on smoke, and the palate loses some body, diminishing the lemon notes. However, upon initial opening, that reviewer's assessment was spot on. At approximately $50 per bottle, this is a whiskey I will continue to keep stocked.

The initial medicinal iodine scent fades to a familiar, enveloping peaty warmth with hints of malt and caramel. Spicy malt emerges on the palate, followed by sweetness and lighter, creamier notes. The finish has lingering tastes of fresh nasturtium blossom – slightly peppery with floral undertones. Classic Port Charlotte – abundant smoke, plenty of barley.

NOSE: Salt, grass, Oak, medicine, cinnamon, vanilla TASTE: earthy, muddy, grassy, chili chocolate. Nothing particularly special. Similar to Ardbeg 10 but costs more Water - light Much lighter, more pleasant, mild peat, still salty, grassy

Ah, the peat! It certainly commands the nose and palate, but a pleasant sweetness of honey, brown sugar, and vanilla is also present. There's a hint of cinnamon too. The finish offers a nice spice, with a touch of bitter chocolate appearing at the end.

I usually don't go for strong peat, but this is flawless. Unlike older versions, the peat in this younger bottling doesn't make it taste like I'm in a burning wooden structure. Really wonderful.

Wonderful peaty spice and iodine notes with a complex and captivating smoke. It's unfortunate that the age statement will no longer be included in future releases, but I still anticipate excellent whiskies nonetheless.
