Port Askaig 12 Year

Spring 2020 Edition: Eighteen ex bourbon hogsheads from 2006 and 2007 were combined for this limited Islay single malt. Nose: Faint smoke, citrus / lemon, sea air. Palate: Mild bonfire smoke, toffee, seaweed, citrus, light gentle dry peat smoke. Finish: Extended warm finish, pepper, mild smoke, herbal / vegetal at the very end. Likely distilled at Caol Ila. This is an introductory peated malt. Nice and easy to drink. It tied for second place out of the six malts sampled that night, receiving 14% of the vote for favourite.

Very peaty and quite salty, with a lingering presence. It stings the nose but has a smooth mouthfeel. Don't let it linger too long on the palate, though; the persistent peat taste remains. It's not perfect, but it's good.

Sampled a Port Askaig from Islay, bottled at 100 Proof (57.1% ABV).

Aroma of dirt, smoke, and the sea, with a hint of sweetness.
